Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

The forums certainly have died right off. Personally im not a fan of the Facebook groups so ill stick to forums.

Funny that Dylan mentions that no one does build threads anymore - i find that nobody ever tends to look/comment on the build threads that are on this forum - including 2 of my own. It also doesn't help that some people do build threads in their cars dedicated sub forum rather than in the actual members rides area.

Sadly, it’s the same story for many forums. There are a range of issues that can/are at play. In the olden days (and even still today), it’s not so easy to setup a forum, get licences, hosting, servers, security and all that. And that’s before you try to attract enough of an audience to make it worthwhile. So forums were less prevalent thanks to setup costs and upkeep.

Now with Facebook, if you get disgruntled on the forums (or even in a given Facebook group) it takes 30 seconds to create a special groups for lovers of croutons or whatever it might be that tickles your fancy. Better yet, people are more than happy to just click “join group” knowing that it’s just another item on their feed, which also means even if there isn’t a lot of content it doesn’t matter since it’s all in the noise.

For me the downside is that lack of searchable content. Less (no??) real build threads. This place still gets thousands of hits for random old threads where someone is looking for info on some obscure clip/part/process/build.

I mean just google: vw golf forum seatbelt australia
Let me google that for you
and you’ll find all sorts of threads about child restraints, buckles, warning chimes….

Search: Golf VR6 leaking footwell Australia
Let me google that for you

                Again plenty of relevant content.

                Try that on facebook.

For me, I keep an eye on Facebook, mostly because I’m there anyway, but will post my builds things on forums. Facebook has it’s place, but I just don’t think people realise how much great knowledge is being lost into that big black hole

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Well I stopped as I am not a fan of being ridiculed... we all ask stupid questions and say silly things, but being ridiculed isn't fun... the tone of some of the replies are getting ruder by the day.... it's off putting as this was a great forum...

If this is a problem, then maybe the moderators should step up. At the top of the page under rules it says " no antisocial posts. They will be edited or deleted mercilessly"
A couple of things that disappoints me is when members go to the trouble to find an answer to a question & type in a detailed reply & there is no thank you.
Second gripe is when there is a lengthy thread on a problem & when the OP gets a result, he/she disappears without reposting leaving the rest of us wondering if the advice given was helpful.
Both of these problems for me are a reflection of our society, not much give but plenty of take.
Overall this forum is great & I have learned a lot from others experiences & knowledge.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

Yeah I too miss "the old days" but the reality is all forums seem to have their lifecycle, I've found this on a few past ones now. I think there are always harsh posts from certain people, but when there are big numbers they kind of get drowned out. When numbers drop, the tools stand out more. The other factor is most people have moved on and upgraded from "the old days" and gone to better brands such as Audi etc, so I guess it's up to the new blood who are buying into VW currently to rev things up a bit.

For me personally I don't have the time and disposable cash currently to do mods and create build threads, and that is something I'm currently missing big-time. Still all things change, it's the way of the world.

I check for posts every day but I don't have much to say.

Got my wife's 2015 Polo GTI serviced yesterday (30,000kms) and it cost $389. Long gone are the days of the <$300 service.
