Touring Tasmania

Hi All,

I'm planning a road tour of Tasmania and am interested in peoples advice/experiences. We will be ferrying over either our Alfa 75 or Skoda TDI and have 9 nights on the Island.

What are some must see/must drive attractions?

Should we go clockwise or anti-clockwise? So far we're planning to go anticlockwise via Strahan then to Hobart and up the east coast.

What are the roads like? The wifes Skoda would be more comfortable if the roads are marginal, and its got a fair bit more grunt and range however my preference is the 75.

I love Tasmania, been there 4 or 5 times but since we own a dog, quite difficult to travel there. I really like the area south of Hobart through Kingston and further down to Kettering. One can also turn right from Kingston down as far as Geeveston where there is a air walk.
Another trip is either side of the Tamar River north of Launceston, crossing at the Batman bridge.
The road from St Helens to Launceston doesn't look too far on the map but is very winding so allow the best part of a day to travel.
There is so much to see in Tas. so leave some for the next time otherwise you will spend every day just driving.

Take the Alfa. Lots of "driver" roads and you'll be kicking yourself if you took the Skoda.

I once got seasick doing the 170 corners leading into Queenstown but it was worth it.

We drove a Corrolla when we went there some years back , it was fabulous to drive all around Tassie even the dirt road through the lakes district between Hobart and Devonport . But hey you know the saying the best cars to drive on holiday is a HIRE car they go the fastest and will go just about everywhere . Kidding aside there are not many roads that would cause the average sedan any problem , common sense is what you use in a strange place .
