Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

The thing though is that in the strict reading of the regulations, there is no issue. When tested in accordance with the regulations, the vehicles pass. The regulations do not have an in-service emission test.

The problem is with the regulations that were developed in the era of carburettors and simple ignition control systems. Even the PC was not around when the regulations that everything is based on was first developed. These days, everything changes, and there would not be a single car maker in the world who would have engine mapping that remains unchanged. If any sensor detects a change in its inputs, the mapping of the engine will change. This is not something unique to VW.

Where it does become a problem for VW is if specific inputs intentionally disabled emission control systems with full knowledge that such disabling would result in an increase in emissions that are of the order reported. This cannot be established because no one knows exactly what has happened.

When you look at the definition of a defeat device, basically ANY system that changes mapping from that used in the test would qualify, and this means that there is not a single manufacturer that would be able to duck that one. Even if they claim that their mapping does not change, the mapping would be designed to produce a favourable result in the test, and never mind elsewhere. Engine management systems are dynamic and it would be close on impossible to cover every possible combination of inputs from the sensors.

But given that the vehicles in question have no DEF injection and so far no one is suggesting that there were bypass pipes for the DPF and catalytic converter, the only thing I can see is varying the fuel injection map, the amount of EGR, and when the wastegate opened. Even with the wastegate, I would expect it to connect back to the exhaust downstream of the turbo and before the first of the emission control devices.

We wait for VW to come clean.

From the new VW verification website. Summarised translation, according to the VIN our Alltrack has the engine with the software hack (that's what I call it).

Seeing as I didn't buy the thing for meeting Californian and EPA NOx emissions standard but for power, consumption and low CO2 - AND I'm so used to software cheats for benchmarks and performance tests - this whole thing to me is just mostly an eye-rolling affair. I wonder if I can refuse the "fixes" if they worsen any of the factors that made me buy the car in the first place?

All you folk talking about refusing "fixes", why not go the whole hog and get a remap & really see your engines come alive.

              Scandal, Shmaldle...

Who gives a toss? The Diesel emissions standards for the US were/are very difficult to meet. The authority said they had to do a test and pass it. VW formulated a plan to PASS THE TEST as they were required to do. Then they gave the public what they wanted, which is low fuel consumption.

Well in Australia, a very large number of us never go near a stinking city and could not care less about a few NO's coming out the back in the back of beyond. Much more interested in getting very high milage.

If the Australian cars had this technology activated, I commend them and it only makes me more interested in buying one of their very fuel efficient Diesels.

              A storm in a teacup.

Anyhow, I drive a Petrol powered VW.......

                Compare Passat and Ford focus

                From BBC

We chose a two litre Volkswagen, because it is the company at the centre of the scandal, and a 1.5 litre Ford Focus, which according to DVLA figures is the second most popular diesel car on Britain's roads today (after the VW Golf).

We are not suggesting that either of these cars is cheating in any way.
Engines have to meet European emissions regulations based on when they were built. The VW Passat that was tested was a slightly older model, so it had to meet the less stringent Euro 5 requirements. The newer Ford Focus had to meet the tougher Euro 6 standards.
                Our results

In the tests conducted for the BBC, the VW emitted 0.664g of NOx per km, which is a touch under four times the regulated limit of 0.18g under the Euro 5 rules.

It managed 41.7 miles per gallon in urban testing, which is close to its published urban fuel efficiency of 44.8 mpg.

The Ford emitted 0.422g of NOx per km, which is more than five times the regulated limit of 0.08g under the Euro 6 rules.

It managed 47 miles per gallon in urban testing - well below its published urban fuel efficiency of 65.7 mpg.

Well that doesnt say Passats and yet other sites do. When I go to the Check your vehicle site it says Very sorry but your vehicle is affected.

So who is telling the truth Best just sit and wait and let it all come out at the usual VW snails pace

Pity I liked the car but seems it's worth more trouble than it is.
