That article has closer to answers for the diesels:

VW's UK boss Paul Willis has confirmed the 1.2-litre and 2.0-litre diesel engines will require a software fix, while vehicles with a 1.6-litre diesel will also need new injectors fitted. [...]

While UK vehicles look to get by with software tweaks and injector swaps, vehicles in the US may be in need of physical changes to the catalytic converters and/or the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) AdBlue urea injection systems.

Maybe it's just easier for VW to come out and say which models AREN'T affected instead of the ones that ARE.... Just sayin'.

You can bet that no VW owner will be wanting to pay to have adblue refills either. Mazda rorted Oz customers locally with what they charged for it. A lot of owners started to buy it from servos and add it in themselves as it was drastically cheaper, so that is saying something. I can recall an apprentice at a far North QLD dealer putting the adblue into a brand new CX9 fuel tank.....the owner asked for a completely new car.

I'm not defending VW's actions at all but I'm not comfortable with that statement. How do you arrive at that conclusion?

Why are people still defending a fraud?
As to effects! Increased NOx has been linked to numerous health issues including type 1 diabetes of which 2 of my children have been diagnosed with in the last 12 months. Now with a fraudulent car claiming to be clean but in reality emitting more nox than a semi, yes there are issues that need resolving. Throw in a minimum 20% loss in trade value and either performance or economy losses with the "fix" and it's a big loss all round.
Please stop trying to defend an admitted crime transporter and arcadelt.

You really need to settle down my friend and read my post in the context of what I was responding to and my other posts. It's the overblown hype that I have seen in this discussion (including your completely uninformed "claiming to be clean but in reality emitting more nox than a semi" comment ) that I am railing against.

I still think this is blown well out of proportion. I have polished stainless steel exhaust tips that I actually polish the inside of. Once I polish them the inside of my exhaust stays shinny and clean for at least 3 months in which I drive about 1200km per month.

No go and stick your finger into the next diesel vehicle you find in the car park and tell me how black your finger is.

Thanks for the link. I notice they failed to mention what fuel the bus or tuck would be using. If they were comparing a bus or truck running on petrol or LPG then of course they will produce far less NOX. What they fail to mention though is running or petrol or LPG will produce far more different pollutants that are far worse for us and the environment.

What ever sells new I guess. Just tell half the story.

I think the critics need reminding that VW is not the only maker. I think in various stories I've seen near all the manufactures named.

I really believe the whole system is a farce. One manufacture got too close to the standard so the officials moved the goal. Then someone got close again and the officials moved the goal again. At some point someone started to cheat and passed what is not achievable. The officials moved the goal again and then they all started to cheat.

The action that has started against VW is purely response to public opinion which is driven by the media. At some point someone will realize that VW is no worse then any of the other manufactures but by that time diesel pollution will be old news, people will be tied of reading it and as it wont sell news, it wont be reported. By that time VW will have a fight to regain which position it can in the market.

There are plenty of holes showing in the media as I pointed out previously with comparing the VW diesel to a Truck or Bus but not including what fuel the truck or bus used. They eluded later that truck and bus drivers are happy to use adblue but didn't actually say that a VW diesel is worse than a diesel bus or truck. Another is how they keep calling it a "Cheat Device". It's not a device at all. It's just a program in the Stock Standard ECU that I have no doubt other manufactures use. The difference is the program that looks for a certain set of conditions and runs the engine differently to produce less NOX.

Some of the possible suggested fixes include the engine using more fuel to run the exhaust hotter and burn off the NOX. If you put more in, more has to come out. Yes it might make less NOX but it's impossible for it to not make more of something else. Who knows if that something else is better or worse for us and the environment. Yes the it might then meet the standard but that doesn't mean its better.

Diesel buses n trucks, with cars being 2-5 times worse than their allowed they are worse than the trucks, now with vw being up to 40 times euro 5/6 the maths aren't that hard?

The question needs to be asked,
Are they talking about the trucks emissions measured in the real driving conditions on the road or from what the truck manufacturers are stating?

That's a terrible characterisation of how the system works. The authorities keep raising the emissions bar, not because the manufactures are getting close (by the way, the goal is to actually beat the standards, otherwise they are not complying), but to stop the manufactures sitting on their laurel by forcing them to keep improving their emission standards.

Yeh. Something just doesn't add up with that article. If you put more fuel in, more has to come out. It's only the form that it comes out as that they try and change. All the readings that they show have the heavy vehicles producing less. So either less fuel is being used in which case we'd all be driving around buses because they use less fuel or there are other emissions we are not being told about. I'm backing it's more the later.
