Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    • Ford has ditched DCT on the 2016 models so I've heard. Apparently much better.
      Past - '95 VW Golf MK3 VR6
Present - '11 Ford Focus LW Diesel (PSA DW10C)

I wouldn't swap 1 DSG for 10 manuals with cash my way. After driving millions of K's in manual trucks there is no way on God's earth I am ever going to use another manual. Thankfully all the latest trucks are auto as well.

Huge difference between trucks and cars. Personally, I find driving manual cars more engaging, so it would be good if everyone had a choice. Unfortunately, that choice is slowly being whittled away in the favour of autos.

          • Yes, it won't be long and the manual box will at best be an option and probably extinct.

              Sadly true.

              • Well I am in the manual camp as well , 2005 T5 van pitiful 2.0 petrol engine mated to a manual box with a diabolical DMF [that's another story] 290000 kays and never an issue , yes clutch plate replaced 180000 kays . Then 2005 T5 2.5 Turbo Diesel mated to the Tiptronic auto at 60000 kays developed clunky change from 3rd to 4th and back down again plus occasional slipping sensation . Dealers refused to service it only offered to replace the box at a paltry $12000 . then at 120000 kays its disintegrated due to that Sealed for Life bulls*+t . 2012 T5 van 2.0 turbo diesel mated to the now infamous DSG 2 weeks old it rolled away backwards down hill because of a "false neutral "WTF is that ? You have to wonder if there is a room full of designers who seem to delight in using us their customers as guinea pigs for their diabolical designs .

Sure can, but mess with the EGR too much, such as blanking it off, and your DPF regens will default to km based burns rather than actually measuring it. EGR is an integrated part of modern DPF's sadly, but the relationship varies between models. Reduction is the key, not turning off.

                  • I really would have liked to get a Superb in 2011 after loving our man Octy RS, but no manual option in Australia turned me right off. That was just before all the big news about the 7 speed DSG. I almost got the Elegance Mk3 Octy but again 7 spd DSG so waited to get another RS Octy in manual again although the 6 Spd the RS uses is a bit tougher. Still prefer man.

                    • Same, I have said this before on this forum. We test drove a 2011 Caddy Maxi Life TDI DSG before we ordered our Caddy Life. We hated how the DSG struggled to get the right gear preselected for roundabouts (not that there are many roundabouts here in Canberra . . . ). As both my wife and I prefer manuals, we ordered ours with a manual gearbox. We dodged a bullet, bigtime. Everytime I go into CVWC for a service, they always ask if ours is a DSG and show a visible sense of relief when we say it is a manual.

                      • I drove a near new Skoda hire car a few years back in Mackay while doing a work related job , my 16 year old son was with me and he commented if I was having trouble driving the thing . As it was my first exposure to the DSG it was a nightmare to keep it smooth seemed to jerk and all sorts of weird things .

I used to get Octavias as a hire car from Europcar all the time as I had one and knew what I could fit in it for work. Was great but yes the DSG drove me nuts. Parallel parking up a steep hill was the deciding point as the car kept rolling forward towards the car I was trying to park behind so had to use two pedals and couldn't trust it was going to engage the clutch correctly. Its fun with a manual but at least I can control the clutch picking up. Roundabouts they always seem to be in too high a gear...
