  • Kids car seats

    Hello,
Does anyone know how many kids car seats will fit in the back of a MK1 or MK2 5 door? I have a MK3 and the answer is 2 and no more! Not even room for a butt cheek.
I am in the process of selling/swapping my MK3 VR6 and someone threw me the idea of putting the VR6 including driveline into a MK1 and that got me a little exited. But it aint going to work if I can't get 3 kids in the back.
    Thanks in advance.

One way to check is to see how many child restraint anchor points are in the rear . Naturally 3 child seats may be physically too big to fit across the back seat anyway . But more important is how many anchors if only 2 then I would not be trying to do any more than that . Current ADR's would suggest that if the car is a 3 person back seat then it should have 3 child anchor points fitted at the factory . Remember your children's lives are worth more than a chance taken on an illegal modification or installation . PS yes I used to fit child seats and anchor points into some vehicles .

      How old are your kids?
The seats become more minimal (my 6yo would be fine in a booster alone) as they get older.

You might be able to go big seat, booster, big seat, but I don't think you'd get 3 big seats across a mk2.
What width are you chasing? I'll break out the tape measure in my 4dr mk2.

My mk2 has hefty intrusion bars in the doors - are these in the mk1 too?

If you're having issues with a Mk3, I can't see a Mk1 helping without new child seats. I'm not 100%, but I *think* the rear bar has provision for three seats, although fitting seats in is another question. I'm sure someone can confirm.

There are whole sections of forums dedicated to car seats and the problem of three across. Even in larger cars like Falcadores getting three across can be a challenge, especially as the kids get older and you move from a harness to using the lap/sash arrangement since they then have to squeeze their hands (or yours) into the gap to click the seat belt in place.

I think this is the modern equivalent of the seats we have, they talk about being slimline to fit three across too.

Thanks guys. The MK3 has 3 anchor points but there is no way known that 3 kid seats will fit.
          I have a 2yo and a 4yo with a third on the way.
I'm beginning to think that this will have to remain a dream. Even if I did it, the boot space for 3 kids is going to be minimal.
Maybe in 16 years time when all the kids can drive themselves around I will buy another VR6 and muck around with it... man that's a long way away.

For the record, two kids aged around 12 fit alright in the back of a mk3 (my bro and sis). Another person in the middle would be pushing it.
I drive them daily. They usually keep their bags in the foot area and music instruments fit in the boot.
I would say definitely 2 kids max in the back no matter what age.
