How many KMs are too many?

Hey all,


I'll be checking out a 2010 Golf GTI this weekend that I'm very keen on. The only issue I have is it has 120,000 km on it.


It has full service history (log books) and had a major service done, too. It's a manual too so no DSG maintenance.


Obviously it totally depends on what sort of KM they are and how it's been treated. But generally speaking, what sort of issues tend to arise at this point and what should I look for on it when I inspect?

Kms dont worry me...I had a mk4 R32 with 210.000km on and no issues

Yeah, they don't bother me too much generally if there are service records and the car drives great etc. I just have no experience with Volkswagens and Golfs and I'm not sure what to look out for.

For what it's worth, it's a fairly rural car (down the coast, not in the city) which should hopefully help.

Note the KM's in my signature. 1.8T with stage 1 Revo. 254,000km's. Still pulled hard to redline. Original clutch, did Brake discs/pads about 160,000? Did timing chain and belt twice (every 5 years), blew a coil lead, so replaced all 4, replaced front window winder motors at about 135,000. Had some age related wear and tear, like power window button paint wearing off and radio buttons etc. Had cloth seats and they held up really well. Was probably close to getting a suspension overhaul as I had a slight squeak when hitting speed bumps at 50km/h.

This was an Audi A4, but the general mechanics all come from the same manufacturer.

It will depend on how the car has been treated, and if all services are done on time, then I wouldnt be shy of 120,000. You have at least another 120,000-200,000 to go in it.

My MK2 has 325,000 ks, my MK1 has 370,000 ks.

They last a while.

Just recently picked up an 05 TDI golf with 250kkm. Needs a new starter motor for quicker hot starts and new poly bushings have made it steer like new... Not much for a quarter of a million km. My allroad with the same km feels almost new.
I think the 2.0 tfsi should go for a hell of a long time!

I have a 2010 GTI and love it. Apart from a few bonnet marks from stones it like new. Drivers leather seat has only one small split where my bum brushes past but still runs like a dream with the Bluefin tune. Only issues I've had were intake manifold and dual mass fly wheel which I advise to do if you change the clutch. It's not cheap but saves money on taking the gear box off twice like I had to do. I changed the clutch at 110000klms and within a month had fly wheel issue so gear box came off again at a cost of &600. This all happened around 110000klms. Touch wood, nothing since and I have 150000klms. Like all TSI engines timing chain is the biggest worry. Listen for a rattle on start up, mine is still quiet as a mouse.

Thank you all. It apparently has 142xxx KM on it instead of the ads stated 128xxx.
I'm still very interested in it but don't want to get stung. Would you all recommend getting NRMA or a Euro specialist to check it out?

Only thing I can suggest is a scan with a VAG cable and just see how it drives. At 142xxx if it's not been done already then clutch could be the next thing. I had 2 faulty intake manifolds and a N80 purge valve and charcoal canister problems without an engine come on, these were soft cels that only appeared after a scan. So although there might be no engine light on there may be hidden faults.

He said he's had the clutch replaced 2 months ago and has receipts for all the work. I'll check them all out.

I'm not sure where he's had it serviced but I'll take note. Are there any VAG specialists who I could pay to check the car out too? I was thinking NRMA but happy to pay a bit more for somebody who knows these cars.

Ours has not long clocked 136 k, still runs great, done about 50k in three years, it's a 2008 turbo diesel.

We traded our MkV manual Golf GTI at 195k kms and it was still going strong with original clutch.
