Volkswagen Issues Global Recall of 2.64 Million Vehicles
The financial gurus work out the cost of "doing nothing for as long as possible" vs an official recall vs service bulletins dealing individually as a vehicle is serviced hoping this works however who works out the cost of a brands reputation? All companies have recalls, it's what happens leading up to it, are they dragged kicking and screaming, embarrassed by bad press, some not justified (not the case here it seems) or do they act before their customers have pulled their hair out hitting corporate barricades? Wonder if it's too late for T6 to have a "conventional auto"?
That's plain wrong. Read the other posts in this thread. Some people with 2012 cars were told their cars are not affected by the recall.
That website you posted is probably wrong. It is not a VW site. It probably suggests oils that they think are compatible with the gearbox.
The website is possibly wrong yes.
I don't understand the context about some 2012 owners being told they are not affected?just to clarify we are talking about the recall a few months ago dealing with replacing mechatronic units?
After going over that document pertaining to the maintenance of mechatronic units I'm more inclined to believe VW may be shipping replacement mechatronic units pre filled rather than issuing steps towards refilling with new fluid in existing mechatronic units. What do you guys think?
Yes, that would be my assumption.
Given what we know so far, if the hydraulic fluid needs to be replaced, it seems probable that Volkswagen would send a new mechatronics unit (pre-filled with the correct fluid). Probably wise - less chance for mistakes.
It seems unlikely the dealer would be asked to drain and refill the mechatronics unit.
Still think number of issues and the way it was handled is the same as all other manufacturers?
On the whole, I would say so.
Volkswagen's only problem was they got caught out, owing to a combination of "unfavourable" events.
Much as we empathise with you and others on this forum, you are not the first driver to suffer from false neutrals, nor will you be the last - and that applies across the entire automotive spectrum.
Having said that, I would also make the observation that some gearboxes are clearly less troublesome than others.

That would partly explain why there was no similar "recall" for the Aisin 6-speed auto, which suffered from relatively premature gearbox failures in some instances - only varying levels of goodwill assistance and repairs were offered on a case-by-case basis, so I would assume that some owners were covered for all costs, some not.
I would wager this recall is less of the finance guys telling vw to do nothing versus vw not really having a damn clue on this issue with respect to dq200. If they did know they would have issued a production change in etka months ago to new vehicles. The fact that 2013-2014 jetta hybrids and golf 7 vehicles might be affected also to me seems like they messed up technically.
In case it wasn't already on people's minds, don't break down anytime soon. I've got re 'check engine' light on, and most dealers are looking at 2014 before they can schedule me in. Ass-hats.
Just called VW on 1800 607 822. They have a list of all vehicles with the 7 speed DSG that need an oil change. My 3 June 13 built MK7 Golf is not part of the recall thankfully.
I thought the VW DSG is mostly used under licence from BorgWarner? They in turn started a joint venture with Chinese DUI in 2009? I'm not suprised if the Chinese influence has resulted in a slight lack in quality for those particular units compared to VW's long established production lines in other countries.
Let's not forget that VW have pioneered the production DSG since 2003. I think a few teething issues over 10 years was a forgone conclusion really with a new technology application to production cars. I'm glad VW pioneered it. I think perhaps the issues are comparative to Alfa-Romeos problems with longevity on the Robotised 'Selespeed' Gearboxes that they pioneered long before some othe rmanufacturers, and not to forget Saab's issues with the robotised steptronic gearboxes.
At the end of the day we've witnessed VW consistantly setting the benchmark for quality affordable cars since the late 1970's to present and climb from being an insignificant manufacturer to the largerst car manufacturer in the world, and probably will overtake GM as the largest vehicle manufacturer full stop.
Good to see them making a recal where it's due. I recently had my Triumph recalled to replace a problem that's been around since 2006, and they selected to replace the faulty units on all relevant motorcycles since 2006, almost 7 years ago. I think it's good service myself, and it reflects fairly neutrally on them. I don't neccesarily feel that they are a bad manufacturer for making a recall.
I'm in two minds. The issue seems to be from a lack of testing by vw in various conditions. Seriously hot and humid climates with stop start traffic is not common enough to test this during development stage?
By the way LUK technology makes these dq200 7 speed dsg gearboxes not Borg Warner. I wouldn't blame the Chinese either for this recall.
On the other hand I'm glad a recall is done in the first place.
Call vw and confirm my 2013 polo gti is not affected. Got told only 2008-2012. Really?
Great - not only are our cars affected by a recall but VW can't even get their story straight. Phone agent says 2013 not affected, ACCC website says 2013 is the only year that is affected??
Looks like my Beetle is one of the affected models - wonder how long it'll take until the recall letter arrives.

That's not what the saying "at the end of the day" is used for.
At the end of the day, a few million cars are getting recalled for DSG problems which have inconvenienced and infuriated thousands. We don't all go and say "oh yeah, VW makes quality cars and have been for years". Again, wrong use of the saying.
Seeing how your car isn't affected by this latest recall, I imagine it would indeed be going great, although it doesn't reflect well to crow about it to other forum members who spent good money on buying an Audi, Skoda or Volkswagen and expecting the same level of satisfaction you're currently experiencing, but are not (through no fault of their own).
wife's Fiesta is a pos **** though, knows it's own way to the service dept, never again will I buy Ford
In the same way you wouldn't buy another Ford (based on your observations or experiences), there are those who would never buy another Volkswagen (based on their observations or experiences).
Though personally, I wouldn't dismiss an entire marque based on a single model.
