I drove a T4 Transporter once, set up for a person with non-functioning legs. The hand controls themsleves were an accident waiting to happen.

There is no car in the world that has enough power to beat it's own brakes (this was part of a court defense case in the USA)

But the report said he did apply the brakes, only when he did this the speed actually increased. If you were in that situation, would you have another go at applying the brakes?

Yes.

One was for my father when he wanted to learn to drive. He contracted polio when he was 4, so technically he did have legs, but could not use them to drive.

The other was for a vehicle modification I certified. Basically it had a steering column that worked as a normal steering column, but also was able to be pushed in and pulled out. When pushed in it applied the brakes and when pulled out applied the accelerator.

How many R&D dollars are spent, and how many levels of redundancy are built into a multi-million dollar airliner? Do you seriously believe that level of rigour will extend to all levels of the automotive industry?

There is nothing wrong with technology, however we need to be careful and ensure that we do not try and be too clever and not put the background work in.
