My point all along had been why compare two completely different cars? Can't we just be content with both being good cars with entirely different characteristics?
This!
Aside: No WJ- or anyone-else-bashing please guys. Everyone's entitled to their opinion.
See Randy Pobst race car notes for Laguna Seca re: Motor Trend Best Driver's Car 2012. Read further below for all the notes on BRZ handling. Toyota FT86 didn't make cut.
I always like WJ's posts, they provide useful information and knowledge in suspension and handling. I appreciate the time and efforts WJ makes here and on golfmk5 forum as early as in 2009:
I dont understand the comparison either. they couldnt be more different cars. one is a practical 5 door hatchback which goes and handles reasonably well. other an impractical 2 door coupe without a boot to speak off but is very reasonably priced and goes and handles well but is a toyota !
but really WJ is entitled to compare any two cars he likes. heck with my golf gti lease coming up been looking at all sort of cars ...even cardigan wearing honda accord euro and mazda 6's hehe horses for courses as they say
Once had a Red mk6 GTI + DSG + leather + sunroof + mdi + towbar
Having owned a 2 litre Subaru Liberty I know what traits are and hope the RWD and drive keep everyone excited cause the performance will soon be an issue
Yes, a 2 litre, 121kw, 1400kg, 5 speed sedan that is slower than the 2.5 litre is hardly a reflection of what the BRZ is. It was a poor choice when purchasing a Liberty back then and the sales reflected it. And performance issues? I notice the 0-400m and 0-100km/h times "Wheels" have recorded with the 86 have been almost identical to what they have recorded with their tests of manual Mk6 GTI's.
The deal breaker for me was when I found out the STI version wasn't going to be turbo. I was excited about them up until that point. I love the fact that I spent under $2000 on my GTI on a tune and an air intake, for an extra 30% power, without affecting noise, driveability, fuel consumption or warranty. That flat out is not possible with an NA car.
I also love the fact that, for the 99% of the driving I do, it is a comfortable, quasi-luxury car with good manners, which will give a 6.2L HSV a decent touch up off the lights when I'm feeling boy racerish

Controversy sells magazines I guess. If the front cover says that a $40k car is better than a $100k car, then more average Joe's will buy the magazine.
This is a VW forum so of course you guys are going to protect the cars you drive.. I own a Mk6 Golf... I have driven plenty of GTI's.. they are great cars, no doubt..
How is it not fair to compare an 86GTS with a 3 door GTI? They have fairly equal performance, both 2 doors, similar money... if you are so adoment that it shouldn't be compared with the GTI.. what car should the 86 be compared to?
I really believe you guys are over sensitive about your own cars.. it's like you guys are trying to snob the car with 'how dare they compare a Toyota with my GTI'... and even more offended when the critics say 86 is a better car.. like I keep saying, I am not saying the 86 is a better car than the GTI... but it's a worthy competitor... I had the opportunity to buy a White GOLF R for 38k... I paid more for my 86GTS... and I don't regret it at all : )
Used to own a GTI but never will again unless they go AWD
I'm a harsh critic of VW, incl my R
I don't care what gets compared to what but comparing a turbo FWD euro 5 door to a NA RWD Jap 2 door is a little strange but whatever floats your boat
Almost all on here tune their GTIs which puts them well ahead of the 86 in terms of power and usable torque
I personally think the 86 looks far sexier than the GTI and my R but I didn't buy my R based on its looks.
Whatever floats your boat
However, the constant boring monologue from one poster gets tedious. Sure, I don't have to read it and I have now used the Ignore function to make that happen automatically
