I was lucky enough to be invited to a drive day at Norwell, hosted by Audi and conducted by Brad Jones. I drove a TT, A4,A5 and A6. A lot of fun and topped off by a couple of fast laps with Brad Jones in an RS4.
With a month to go I thought I should gt a bit more familiar with the Phillip Island circuit and purchased an iRacing subscription. This sim is quite a bit harder than GT5 or any other PC sim I've tried.
Thoughts so far:
Getting the first corner entry right is a tad tricky as the car starts to slide toward the apex too early as you break. Nearly lost it on the 3rd lap
You don't realise how much speed you've gathered on approach to the next slow hairpin right (plus last time I deove a PI track the hairpin was further down, so just have to remember to break as soon as the road straightens out.
Need to work on going over the hill toward the next tight right hander, been taking that slow and still not with a lot of grip to spare.
Went to VW Driving Experience course in Adelaide (Mallala) today. Thoroughly recommend it. For a complete novice driver (driving on the road for 20 years) it was a real eye opener and I learnt heaps. Every exercise there was something to take away. And then happy laps at the end were great.
For the laps they didn't load the cars up with the other participants - just instructor and the participant driving. The instructors they had on the course were top guys and ratio was 1:3 so pretty individual attention.
If you're an experienced track driver then maybe you could do better, but for the complete novice $150 for a half day course in someone else's brand new car is fantastic value.
Plus you get to take home your own video as a momento of the day:
I participated in the "progression" session yesterday (Thursday). Good times. I saw Maris, but didn't really get a chance to reintroduce myself. No idea who else was there...
Guess I should look at the video, I got in trouble for making too much tyre noise
Yeah, i missed out too... Left it a couple of days & it was booked out! Gotta be quick!
Can anyone help with what 'software' you need to watch the video? I put the mem. stick in my computer after the Phillip Island day last year & wasn't able to play... Was a memorable & worthwhile day, though!
Yep, it was a great event.
I wasn't there, but somehow, I've ended with the 3 USBs with the video that my 2 daughters and son in law brought home.
Next year, we all go.

I used FormatFactory - a "freeware" program and used it to convert the .avi file to .wmv so that it will play on Windows media player - otherwise you have to download/install the right codec that supports the video format.
There are a number of other free converter programs out there that will do the same thing.

I was there, in the same group as Maris. XTC838 was also there. Was a great day, had a ball!
I'll definitely do the Evolution course next year... considering a road trip to Philip Island for it.

It'll allow you to play the video, but will also parse the vbox GPS files that VW also provide. It gives you track plots, corner and maximum speeds, g-forces, the lot! Also allows you to compare your laps in the GTI and R, play the videos in unison, etc etc.
