I was watching an ad tonight and was surprised by this line:
87% of new Toyotas sold in the last 20 years are still on the road in Australia today.
Source: Toyota Australia: Durability
Now there isn't any * or any extra information to define how they came to this number... and an interesting number it is although I really to wonder how it is arrived at. Remember we are talking *new* cars in the last 20 years so that's '91 onwards. There isn't any list to say it includes or excludes commercial vehicles or what? Surely there is a metric ton of Toyota vans that have done more than enough kilometers to kill them...
Now I need to assume that 87% is quite a good number or they wouldn't be using it, after all it would only take another company to come out and say "well 95% of our cars are still on the road..." and Toyota would look a little silly, but that's not to say they aren't doing it anyway.
So what do you think? Is there a way to check their numbers or compare them with anything else?
