Originally posted by Tim View PostI dont think many people are gonna die doing 167 on the westgate fwy. Especially if the roads were relatively empty at the time. Theyre just using that to try and prove a shakey point theyre trying to make.
Those that are dismissive of this incident being dangerous or saying it is a driver training issue are missing the point. This is about the rule of law and seemingly never ending cases of drivers treating the law with total contempt. I don't think a week has gone by this year that there has not been an horrendous accident where a car has careered off the road at high speed and been torn apart killing one or more of the occupants.
As for not many people dying doing 167 on the Westgate, I have a recollection that there was one of these horrendous accidents on the same stretch of road couple of years ago in which four people died which was the result of a similar sort of speed and also happened in light traffic.
Time for some people to wake up, this sort of behaviour is not acceptable to the majority and we deserve to be protected from these sort of idiots. I, my family, my friends and colleagues all want to get home safely.

This could be construed as condoning 167 in an 80 zone.

It seems that you have missed the reasoning behind my comment.
Im not condoning doing 167 on a public road. Im merely putting the incident in context. The piece of road the guy was caught on is a dead straight stretch of 4 lane fwy. If there is no other traffic on the road its probably not very dangerous to do 167. Thats my opinion.
There are no pedestrians, no crossroads, no driveways, no surprises. It is nothing like doing 120 in a 60 zone.
Again.. Im not saying go out and speed because its safe. Im just saying that the road safety message being rammed down our throats is idiotic and not targeted in a fashion that will reduce the road toll.
Yes.. People do die doing ludicrous speed on freeways.
Yes.. P platers die due to careless driving.
Hundreds of people die on our roads every year. Were most of them due to excessive speeding? Im not convinced.
Could many of them been avoided with better driver training or a driver that is paying better attention? I think so.
My point is merely that someone being caught speeding on a fwy is not news worthy.
I would like to see some pro-active measures taken. Slapping people on the wrist will achieve nothing.Last edited by Tim; 06-06-2010, 08:57 PM.

Actually using their indicators, doing the speed limit in the right lane & drive in their own friggin lane instead of bouncing around!
What urks me most is people that proceed to do a 3 point turn directly in front of you, when they could have waited for you to pass and not
inconvenienced anyone.
Would also be nice if truck and bus drivers didn't span across all lanes so that others could pass them.Mk IV Golf GTI - BMP - GIAC chip, R32 wheels, KW coilovers, rear swaybar.

My point is that this is not a driver training issue, it's an attitude issue. There is simply not enough respect for the law and for fellow human beings these days and it is an attitude that pervades all aspects of our lives not just how people drive on the roads.

The common factor however is that the drivers attitude to the law, his friends and fellow motorists, in both cases the law, friends and fellow motorists were treated with contempt.

you see, you cant make money by going out and catching the two utter pricks that taunted that girl in the wheelchair, sexually molested her, THEN proceeded to beat her, THEN stashed her wheelchair somewhere, THEN tied her up to a pagoda.... in a park within 3 mins drive [iirc] of melbourne cbd.
but catching people doing 63kmh in a 60 zone? sweet. BIG smackaroonies in THAT.
hey, maybe im like you. i think MY moral compass is rooted too.

People die on the roads. Its going to happen. The fact that 4 people died in a car 2 years ago on the same stretch of road is irrelevant. People die in cars every day.
If people were dying in the same fashion on that stretch of road on a regular basis then that would be statistically relevant.
I wouldnt say that peoples values are in question. Its a lack of common sense. A lack of attention. A lack of understanding of the consequences of ones actions.
I would rather come across a driver doing 20kms over the speed limit than a driver doing 20kms under the speed limit whilst trying to send a text messasge on a mobile phone. At least 1 of them is concentrating on where they are going.
There are many things that the gov can do to reduce the limit. Look at the statistics on the TAC website. They have some interesting numbers. Interestingly in the "speed statistics" category they have no useful information.
- Around 20% of fatal road accidents involve driver fatigue.
- Almost 50% of deaths happen in regional areas. Why? What can we do about that? Installing more speed cameras in the metro area wont help.
- 25% of all drivers and motorcyclists killed on Victoria's roads over the last year were 0.05 g/100ml or over. The majority of drivers are heavily intoxicated, registering more than three times over the legal limit.
- A total of 50 pedestrians were killed on Victorian roads in 2009, which represents 17% of all fatalities.
Why are pedestrians getting killed? Is it because cars are going too fast or is it because people are stepping out in front of cars?
- In 2009, 41 drivers and passengers killed were unrestrained. Of the 41 drivers and passengers killed in 2009 who were not wearing a seatbelt and whose BAC reading was known, 32% were intoxicated.
So yeah..
Im not interested in wrapping the population up in cotton wool as it just contributes to the dumbing down of the society.
Im not interested in media sensationalism.
Im interested in what the real issues are and what their solutions may be.

not to harp on about it, but i, for one, think that something needs to be done in order to better educate people on how to drive...
if you dont know how to indicate, if you dont know that you have to give way when turning right into a side street, if you dont know that you have to check for traffic in the right lane before just swinging your door wide open when parked, if you dont know that you shouldnt do a right hand turn into your uni/tafe parking lot, crossing a solid white line, waiting for traffic coming the other way to let you through during peak hour, and forming a queue behind you that's half a click long, if you dont know who has right of way at a round about, if you dont know how to park your big yummy mummy supercharged range rover SUV, if you dont know that you're meant to KEEP LEFT UNLESS OVERTAKING [amongst other things]........
then seriously, get the **** off the road.Last edited by Buller_Scott; 06-06-2010, 10:38 PM.

saw this on golfmkv.com It's automatic: demand for manual cars has shifted down
Scariest quote ever
"Besides, the Park Orchards 17-year-old said, she sometimes found it hard to concentrate. ''It is a lot of pressure and I was worried if I drove a manual I might crash the car,'' Jemma said."

yep "its scary so dont try". THe article is about how few people are getting manual licences anymore.
I think learning to drive a manual makes for a better driver as controlling the car has to be second nature, otherwise you just cant do it.
