Wow really? It'd have to be a looooooooooooooooooooooooong, straight racetrack for me to get at that speed (in my usual, grandma style driving).

            im not:

            >they're well built
            >they're damn economical
            >they have enough zip/torque for shuffling around the city [only 30nm less than an R36, in a package that's more than 200kg lighter]
            >they're just as practical as any other mid-sized sedan out there
            >like all modern VW's, the driver's seat is a nice place to be
            >etc etc

the .:R36 is a gorgeous car etc etc, but isnt it sorta like saying ''i like my BMW M5, and thus i really cannot understand why they sell so many 320d's"?

sorta sounds peculiar. not everyone is trying to find the ultimate compromise between a grand tourer/ sports car, and a shopping trolley.

They aren't badly built. I'll give you that, and they feel safe enough to be in (and no doubt they are safe) but:

hard flat cloth seets - wouldn't want to drive more than about 50km at a time!
gutless - flat to the floor it felt like it wouldn't pull the skin of a custard.
auto gearbox that doesn't seem to know what gear it should be in.
                rough gear changes.
loud engine noise that sounded like a truck! Inside and outside the car - that actually really surprised me because I've heard so many people say the modern diesel cars are very quiet.
average suspension (and that's being kind).
                mediocre inclusions.........

does not a good car make...

sigh yet again, the government skirts the real issue which is poor driver training, poor road quality and driver education.

NO i dont condone speeding, but WHY must we have MORE speed cameras, lower speed limits on 3 lane highways, even tougher hoon laws etc.

I think it is about time we as motorists actually DO something about the ridiculous ever tightening cloak that are Victorian road rules.

What are the chances of getting our voices heard? Getting a petition together or something of similar nature

Wasn't me cause it said Golf and not Polo.... and my Golf can't do 167km/h

                      Hmmm I wonder.....

My $0.02 is that when you have someone doing 70km/h in the right hand lane (as the idiots do on that section of road) and you overtake them it is only a matter of seconds and you are doing 160km/h so its not very hard at all.

Friend of mine did that in his Maloo and lost his license. Guy was doing 80k's in front of him, he put his foot down, went around the car and got pinged 160 in a 100 zone. Lost his license, sold the car. He said he misses his car.

-I have velour seats in my Jetta TDI (well they feel like velour).
-Not gutless. Even stock my car had good pull thanks to the torque. Even better now that it's chipped.
-DSG can be, like any other turbo car, a little confused at times as to what gear it should be in for optimum power.
-Yes the engine is loud, I'll give you that. Diesels will be diesels and as quiet as they may seem, they'll end up being as loud as any other car.
-Suspension? I'm sure I didn't get the same suspension package as you did in your R36, so that's not even a comparable factor. My car is directed towards the retired generation, do you really think they're going to put coils in it?

No illusions necessary; what you get is what you see. You buy a TDI Golf/Jetta not to race around QR, but for the one benefit the diesel has, ECONOMY. Surely the GTD will have uprated suspension but again, it's not a car comparable to an .:R model (R50 excluded).

Back on subject, 167 km/h in an 80 zone??? More than twice the legal limit.....
Cant believe some people canning the law and pointing at poor roads and training!
Thats crazy stuff, as it's the authorities fault??? NO WAY.....
Some people here need to wake up to what the real problem is.....

Probably my fault for steering the topic towards a big whinge. Its not a proper 80 zone I dont believe though. Its a massive 3&4 lane fwy.
I think we are all just sick of the speed kills message being the sole issue rammed down our throats when none of us believe it is the sole issue on our roads.
People are driving slower now than they ever have in melbourne and the road toll is going up.

Theres another news story this morning about a drunk driver weaving down the wrong side of the same fwy. Lucky it was late at night and no-one was killed there!

I think the solution to our problem may be to close off the westgate bridge. I reckon that might make the rest of melbourne safer!
