Keep records of all your dealing with Sony, names, dates, times etc.

If they refuse to fix the product, head down to Fair Trading and lodge a complaint. It's not going to be fast but there is a damn good chance they will end up fixing/replacing it considering how old it is.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

laptops - i will avoid laptops all together in future after bad dealings with toshiba , hp , sony (no surprise there), and hyper sonic (us based company that builds custom laptops ) of all laptops ive never had one last longer then 3 yrs (admitedly that was a toshiba )

desktops -ill build my own , its cheeper and at least you know your components are interchangable when you want to upgrade (im going to avoid dell at all costs, there power supplys and cases are built to go hand in hand and wont fit 3rd party products )

phones - ill go know where near cheep chinese phone products all together even if they are sold in a telstra shop , i wont buy motarolla after having 2 phones from them that have also died (bare in mind i absalutly baby my electrical goods , no rough treatment) , nokia is so far the only compay that has helped me with hand held replacments and actually helped me with product support and ive never owned a nokia that died,....ever ....i still have my original.

dslrs- thats easy canon or nikon , both have beautiful product support and products in general , ive never had a beef with either company. sony brough all there technology from minolta and are still playing the catch up game with every other imitation dslr.

when ever i buy a electrical product i read review after review, i dont buy willy nilly. yet time and time again i keep getting cheep inferior products that offer very little product support, or simply send you in that happy loop that telstra puts you in when they hand you from department to department till you just give up. what baffles me most is sony used to be a good compay that had awsome technical support? what the hell happened? honestly if more and more companies are heading this way , what the hell is going to happen to the consumers? ......... i hope we are all lubed up people cos i have a feeling in the future were all going to be bending over.

k ive had my rant and my winge for the day,...........oh and one more thing my microwave blew up yesterday happy happy joy joy!

back on topic , i have contacted the company in your suggestion hawk, there located in vic , and seem to be not to bad to deal with . (time will tell)

I think you need to move back a couple of centuries, you're incompatible

I think any non-perishable product should have a minimum 3 year warranty. To expect it to last for only 1 year is absurd and a waste. It forces companies to build higher quality products, reduces land-fill and promotes a better relationship with the customer.

LCD's will drop pixels over time. But from what i understand they are pretty reliable. Plazmas have a limited life span apparently.

On the note of custom building PC's, i wotn do it any other way. on my 3rd custom built jobbie. Feels good once youve loaded Windows 7 on, and all ya drivers, installed games. and fire it up for first time.. !!! (ps, Crysis looks nuts on very high in DX10 ... last system couldnt play it ... upgraded Graphics 3 weeks ago and its awesome)

                      Sorry for Hijack lol
what graphics card did you upgrade to? just about anything struggles with crisis, unless of course your watercooling with tri sli anyway.

well my microswave is back and operational , i pulled it apart and used a hair dryer to dry the componants. plugged it back in and it worked. im guessing all this rain weve been having has built up enough humidity to screw with the electrics. pulled out my ps2 which is over 6 years old and has never missed a beat ,.......... forgot how good gt3 is.

Yeow. One of my xbox 360s died for the second time. The one in my living room had died within a year as well. I just ****ed the warranty off, pulled it apart myself and fixed it. Did it to the other ones too.

I did buy a PS3 a few weeks ago too. Heard about the yellow light, but a lot less of them do it than the XBOXs.

                          Hey Mike,

I had my Launch 60Gb PS3 go through the YLOD (yellow light of death) @ Nov 09 and took it to this guy in Melb. http://www.ausgamestore.com/ps3/ps3%20index.html
Cost me approx $150, got it back the same day and he didn't wipe my hardrive! It's still working a treat 4months on and i keep it on top of my entertainment unit instead of inside one of the shelves.
Another group who tackle this problem are: http://www.beetronix.com.au/gaming-c.../ps3-ylod.html but i think they might wipe your HD.

Seeing as you assemble your own PC's you might be smart enough to save some money and do this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U70SgRDVcBo (he has a further 5 parts to this repair on youtube) ( i wasn't cluey enough to even begin to try this!)

                          Little grab off wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3
                          Normal reliability:
According to Ars Technica, the number of PlayStation 3 consoles that have experienced failure is well within the normal failure rates in the consumer electronics industry.[124]

However, the BBC television programme Watchdog aired a report investigating the purported "yellow light of death" issue, which affects about 0.5%[125] of PlayStation 3s. The yellow light indicates a non-specific hardware failure.

The program also noted that the PlayStation 3 has a one-year warranty (typical of most consumer electronics products). Out-of-warranty PlayStation 3 owners can pay Sony a set fee for a refurbished console.[126]

In response to the tone of the program, senior vice president and managing director, Ray Maguire issued a document criticizing the program and citing potential attempt to harm Sony and PlayStation brand, and stating that the numbers of faulty PlayStation 3 systems the program mentioned are not evidence of a manufacturing defect.[127]

                          Good luck with it all.

                          Cheers,
                          Jayse.
