The brother in law had a busted PS3 and I hunted up this mob for him: http://www.globalconsoles.com/ps3_repair.html

Never ended up trying them out and don't know anything about them, but thought I would mentions since they look like a reasonable option.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

cheers thanks , ill throw them an email. the scary thing is after trolling a number of forums now, when this happens to a ps3 (which is quite often apparently) it is 90% of the time the cell processor or the gpu chip desoldering away from the main pcb. ive now had 2 ps3's die on me in just over 2 years. (my waranty ran out 2 weeks ago ffs!).............not happy with sonys performance of late. ( 2 of there dslrs died on me as well 4 years ago)
are there similar problems to this with the xbox 360? and/ or as frequent?........ to all you 360 owners out there?

Just buy a 360. Heaps better.

The early ones had the red halo of doom (mine did it) but they fixed them out of warranty for free and everything. It was the disk drive on them. I ended up acquiring another later one anyways and never had a problem. Ever.

if the 360 came out with blue ray compatability id buy it in a heart beat.

              Re: my ps3 died

You can try hitting up Sony under a statutory warranty...
Is it *reasonable* to expect that your PS3 lasts for 54 weeks??

The answer is clearly no, so they should fix it...

talking to sony australia is like beating your own head into the pavement. i went down that path with both of my dslrs i got from them (that died might i add). the only interest sony has is with its self, it cares lil to nothing for there customers. so ive devised a small list as to which companies i buy from in future.

laptops - i will avoid laptops all together in future after bad dealings with toshiba , hp , sony (no surprise there), and hyper sonic (us based company that builds custom laptops ) of all laptops ive never had one last longer then 3 yrs (admitedly that was a toshiba )

desktops -ill build my own , its cheeper and at least you know your components are interchangable when you want to upgrade (im going to avoid dell at all costs, there power supplys and cases are built to go hand in hand and wont fit 3rd party products )

phones - ill go know where near cheep chinese phone products all together even if they are sold in a telstra shop , i wont buy motarolla after having 2 phones from them that have also died (bare in mind i absalutly baby my electrical goods , no rough treatment) , nokia is so far the only compay that has helped me with hand held replacments and actually helped me with product support and ive never owned a nokia that died,....ever ....i still have my original.

dslrs- thats easy canon or nikon , both have beautiful product support and products in general , ive never had a beef with either company. sony brough all there technology from minolta and are still playing the catch up game with every other imitation dslr.

when ever i buy a electrical product i read review after review, i dont buy willy nilly. yet time and time again i keep getting cheep inferior products that offer very little product support, or simply send you in that happy loop that telstra puts you in when they hand you from department to department till you just give up. what baffles me most is sony used to be a good compay that had awsome technical support? what the hell happened? honestly if more and more companies are heading this way , what the hell is going to happen to the consumers? ......... i hope we are all lubed up people cos i have a feeling in the future were all going to be bending over.

k ive had my rant and my winge for the day,...........oh and one more thing my microwave blew up yesterday happy happy joy joy!

back on topic , i have contacted the company in your suggestion hawk, there located in vic , and seem to be not to bad to deal with . (time will tell)

I had the red ring of death with my 360 as well. Mine too was in warranty and they fixed it for free. Now out of warranty and just last week i got the red ring again. Don't think they ever really resolved the problem, there were numerous reasons for them dying but all to do with them overheating. Really makes me mad as now I have to fork out $150 if I want it repaired by Microsoft. Thinking I now want a PS3, however hadn't heard of the above problem. Just a few tips to anyone thinking of buying a 360. Make sure you buy a fan for it, make sure you turn it off when you stop using it (don't leave it on if you want to play it a few hrs later) and also keep it in a relatively dust free environment.

I'm hearing that. On my first ever from scratch PC and it's awesome. My mates all told me to do it age ago and last year I bit the bullet. I shopped around, spoke to some friends in the know then bought all the parts and went about figuring out how the hell everything goes together. Had it done and working in an afternoon.

Value for money, everything works, only run the software I WANT to run. Bloody excellent. Haven't gone to Windows 7 yet. I'm still running vista ultimate which has only ever crashed on me once and recovered itself completely.

Why you would buy something from Dell or any of those other companies is beyond me. No way i'd ever do that.

Let us know how you go, Mike. However from now on i think i'll stick to PC gaming. Much better unless you have some mates around.

I've had my PS3 for 3 years now (I got it the day they came out) and it has been left on almost 24/7 since I got it and it's never even frozen on me. I have also had fantastic technical support from Sony when ever I couldn't work something out. I also had a ps2 for 10 years and never had an issue... I've always kept them out of the cupboard and dusted them regularly tho.

I have had all sorts of issues with 360's in the past tho and gave up on them when I bought the ps3. If you do keep your ps3 in a tv cabinet/cupboard make sure it has plenty of space around it and the doors are always left open as they get stupidly hot and this is what normally wrecks them.

funny that you mention that stuff, mike- you know, in japan, it's sorta a common knowledge thing/ stigma that sony stuff only has a lifespan of 1.5 times the warranty period.

i bought some big ass bad ass sony headphones for 12800 yen when i lived there. i later got some smaller panasonic ones for 2800 yen- hack headphones for the snow that i wouldnt fret over if they got wet etc.

the panasonics had superior sound quality to the sonys that cost 4x the price.

my sister just got some audio technicas in tokyo that blow the crap outta sonys 3x the price.

It's hardly surprising that so many x360's & PS3's die from overheating. They are high performance bits of computing equipment and many dullard users simply stuff them into enclosed spaces without the proper ventilation. I dont know about Sony but M$ has put in effort to improve their designs with better cooling and from what I've heard it has been an improvement.

Personally, I have had an x360 elite for over a year without any issues. It sits in an open area where it can breathe nice n easy. It never gets hot and the fans are never pumping hard. I expect it should live a long fruitful life

As for Sony gear? Um yeah. I've got a sony mobile, it's about a year old. It hasnt broken (yet, touch wood) but it does behave rather oddly. Dont really expect too much out of it to be honest. I've got a 10 year old Sony CRT TV (36"!!!) though that runs just sweet.
