Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Insurance Quotes...

Like most of us I'm always up to save a buck, so sitting here I just saw an add for youi and thought i would have a look see since the ad was talking about being cheaper if you catch public transport and don't drive to work... you know, they don't assume things about you...

As I started entering my details I decided to list the car as a stock standard then start adding mods to see how far I could push it.

For a little background, 30 year old male driver, perfect history, car garaged in NSW 2560.

So, like I said, listed with no mods far an agreed value of $8,100 (the highest they let me go)... so the annual premium?

    .
    .
    .
    .
    $1732

W.T.F.? I pay less than that for TWO cars with Shannons WITH all my mods listed, both for agreed values.

In other news I have to hunt up the company my mate uses, he has an old Torana with a modern Commodore V6, custom paint, wheels, drive line, interior etc etc, probably under insured at $30k, same age and experience as me. AFAIK the only condition on his insurance is no more than 7,000km a year (although I need to check what else if anything is really behind it)... but his YEARLY full comprehensive insurance premium... LESS THAN $300. Thats right, THREE HUNDRED. Did I mention he also lives in NSW 2560?

How are these things so different?

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Ah insurers what a joke. I pay less than that for my car with Shannons with all my mods listed and being 25 years old.

My annual premium is less than $900 through Shannons for my Bora V6 4Motion, all mods listed, agreed value of $22k. I'm 32 years old, clean driving record.

Budget Direct would be another one that I reckon would be a laugh.

EDIT: Actually, they're not hideous. $902 for the year, listed as modified (though most mods not detailed).

Heh I used to look forward to being 25 and getting "cheap" insurance. Now it looks like I get to look forward to being 30.

Well, when I turned 30 my premium didn't drop, only increased slightly like it does every year

(BTW I pay about $350-$400 with Shannons for agreed value, no off-street parking in a busy area for the Mk1)

Yeah, it's dodgy as all hell how some people have new GTI's, modified insured for bigger $$ and still pay less than me in the a Mk3

And yeah, under 25 changed to under 30 in the last year or so, sucks.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

You seem to have forgotten some very pertinent information :

Insurance companies only exist to :

1 Pay high salaries and bonuses to their executives and directors, and

              2 Maximise profits for shareholders

(and yes, I believe I got the order correct).

Unfortunately they are not there to give us cheap (or even reasonably priced) insurance for our cars.

So if they want to charge "too much" the only thing you can do is see if someone else offers better insurance (remember the premium is only one of many important factors to consider when buying insurance, and the cover you get will suddenly be far more important than how much it cost you if you ever do make a claim).

But insurance is always expenisve for 21 year olds...

As a 24 year old with less mods than I have now they wanted ~4600 a year for insurance.

I just got on board with AAMI. I got away with all mods listed, less than glowing driving history, 10 years driving experiance, and I have rating protection. All said an done, my premium came to $688 with an agreed value of $22,500.

I'm Western Sydney too you know!

My guess is that you're young, driving a modified turbo car, and their underwriters see you as a risk. It's unfortunate, even unfair, but that'd be my guess.

Shannons have been really good for me - I was a little worried after they got bought by their new owners, but I was impressed when I did finally talk to them.

Got both my green slips through Shannons now too, cheapest option I could find for both cars.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
