Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • My new EOS just had the DSG fail

    Hi,

I recently purchased a used EOS 2011 and in less than a week the DSG mechatronics unit failed.
I test drove and had it checked by a mechanic before purchase and serviced it after purchase.

It is now at a place called mechanic that specialize in DSG repairs. They quoted $3,800 for the mechatronic unit and possibly a further $1,800 for a clutch pack.

The transmission seems to be just fine, no noticeable shuddering, shaking, jerking, no harsh shifting but when the transmission warms up it fails by not going into 4th gear. P,R,N,1,2,3 all still function correctly. Once it cools down everything works just right again.

Should I just bite the bullet? or is a there a cheaper option, will VW australia help in any way? isnt it a known fault?
    Does this all seem plausible?
I hope my engine doesn't explode the week after I get it fixed, isnt their also a concern with the timing chain tensioner?
