Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Any reason it's not in show rooms in Australia?

VW Oz want it but it's designed for the North American market - not engineered for RHD.

So what? They can just make it in RHD like everything else we get here. They're all designed for LHD markets too.

Rofl...if it was as easy as sticking a steering wheel on the other side of the car our market would be even more interesting. Engineering and development cost are prohibitive...especially when there are few RHD countries and even fewer that would be interested in a SUV so large. So if the sales ain't there to cover the cost it's not worth the investment.

Yes it s a sad fact that we are a minority country being RHD , we miss out on so many models because of that anomilty . I get agro when I see all these American utes to be on offer shortly in Australia , a Doge Ram being touted for sale at around $150000 AU the same ute is $85000 AU in LHD . So the local importers want $65000 to import and convert it here . Then the real insult comes because some years back during the mid 2000,s GMH were actually building LHD Calais for export to the middle east and the US markets . what made me gag was those cars built here in LHD were then shipped to the US West Coast trucked across the US to dealers and then sold for LESS than what we were paying here at the time plus the US ones were "Fully Loaded "as the yanks got every single option plus more standard on every car .

We should have changed when Sweden did. We had the chance. Wouldn't be possible now.

With the benefit of hindsight, that is correct but who would have predicted how the automotive world would evolve.

As you say, would have been relatively easy back in the sixties or even the seventies when it was basically just standard type roads but just imagine trying to re-engineer for example the Sydney Harbour Bridge approaches, cross city tunnel, harbour tunnel, Darling Harbour with it's myriad of flyovers etc. Every city would have immense re-design issues to overcome.

                  Cheers

Exactly! Anything today is too hard and when done, often they stuff it up. So much for all these planners and advisors.

Sweden never changed the side the steering wheel was on.
They changed the side if the road they drove on.
