Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Replacement Key Cases

My wife like the look of them and in theory it should be easy enough to swap over the internal electronics. I haven't actually looked at the immobiliser chip to see how hard that would be to swap over.

So, has anyone tried these things?

3 Button Key Fob Case Replacement For VW Golf Passat Jeetle Jetta Polo Bora 71.7 x 34.3 x 17.5mm-in Key Case for Car from Automobiles & Motorcycles on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group

3 Buttons Remote Key Case Fob for VW VOLKSWAGEN BORA Beetle Golf PASSAT S2f4 | eBay

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Yep they are easy enough to swap the shell over.
Plenty of videos online of how to disassemble them.
You can also get mk7 style cases but they take maybe 20mins to do as you have to swap over the blade to a new hinge part which makes the blade rotate by 90 degrees.

She couldn't care less about the new style, she just liked the coloured bit (and I liked that it wasn't some stick on or silicon cover.

I didn't even think to look, but I might have to look into the videos to see exactly what is involved.

Mind you, at the moment I'm trying to pretend there isn't a problem with the lock barrel itself, my wife tells me it turned all the way around the other day ... but after a little jiggling it's working properly again and I can't feel anything different to the other car (it's not overly sloppy or rough or clicky or anything). It's working and feels just as good as it did last week :S

Best guess is that something has snapped inside and it happens to be sitting in just the right spot at the moment. I've got a quote to replace the (likely) required bits and it's more than I can really afford to spend right at the moment and while DIY would probably save me a huge chunk of that, it's also one of those parts that if you screw it up you're left with a vehicle that's undrivable. I'm hoping it hold together until I have some leave in January so I can dedicate a little time to looking at it closer.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

I've just had a closer look at these and have realised the blanks I listed are for the older MKIV style keys (maybe MKV too?). Not the MKVI ones.
