Regarding the Mk1 Golf, you say you got 243kW out of a 1.8litre turbo engine?! That's an insane level of power. Handling must be a real shocker though.

Yes, 243kw at the wheels dynoed in Johannesburg. And that was probably less than what it actually made but the best we could do as we had trouble preventing it from breaking into a wheelspin on the rollers.

I remember we had 6 guys actually physically holding the nose down (in addition to the straps), being 2 each side to put some weight in the nose and we used "trackbite" on the tyres or whatever that stuff's real name was .... crazy days ....

It truly made monster power, but remember that this was a fully worked engine with special internals etc. Handling was atrocious and even a straight line run was hard work.

But I loved it and still 8 years later would do it all over again in a heartbeat if my wife would let me ....

So I added an old new Golf MK4 to the family. To be a general runabout, station car and kids learn to drive car. MK4 1.6 manual ....

Well, thanks to VWA and their poorly chosen option regarding suitable cars, I have purchased my 1st NON VW in 10 years! .... having purchased 4 new VWs in that 10 years, their current options just did not offer what I wanted .....

My needs was simple (I thought so anyway)

1. long warranty and once a year servicing (at capped prices)
2. decently poweful yet super reliable engine
3. manual (6 speed)
4. P plate friendly (no turbos then )
5. lots of inclusions as standard.
6. not too expensive given that it is a runabout, learner, p plater transport etc .... general cheap dogsbody then ....

Meet Casper, the only car on the market that I could find that ticked all my boxes .....






And boy has Hyundai moved forward since I last owned 1 more than 10 years ago ..... they seem to have studied VW's cars closely the last view years ..... drive is actually quite nice, OK power for a 1.6 MPI, it even has auto door locking and 3 blink turn signals these days .... BT and 6" Colour Screen radio also standard and MFD as well!

BTW A new Polo was also considered, 1.2TSI a bit better IMO, but also $5K more expensive! and with a troublesome TSI engine also it seems, so the 1.4 Polo the only real competition, but alas it simply wasn't ..... so dull (and slow) to drive and nothing special (as in features) included as standard or even available as an option at the same price as the Accent. In the end it was a no-brainer really.

Sad day, for a house that has had 11 VWs to date .... unless VW picks up their game, the Amarok likely to be the last.
