Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • DPF problem and dealer shock!

    Hi,
Have done too many short journeys in my 2011 T5 103 (64000k's) and got the light, didn't do a long journey then got the flashing coil, steady dpf and steady engine lights and loss of power. Took it to vw dealer, went overseas for 10 days then came back to be told that my water pump was leaking and had leaked on to a sensor (not sure which one), both require replacement. I checked the coolant level not long ago and haven't noticed any drop.
I have had very poor service from this dealer and don't trust them as far as I can throw an elephant! They now want me to approve all the work, give credit card for them to 'order the parts' (which I find weird as the parts warehouse is near their service centre and they are vw parts so why should I have to provide a credit card, surely if they don't use them I don't pay??).

I have asked them to do a forced regeneration then I want the vehicle back to get a second opinion on the water pump before I stump up $2000.00 they have quoted. They are pushing me to give them the go ahead to do it all in one go but already confirmed that the water pump will take a full day.

It all stinks to me but am I being paranoid? Can I get it checked and done by someone else. I really do not want to go back to the dealer!

I'm based in Manly, Northern Beaches Sydney.

    Thanks

Their approach does sound a bit odd.

The Sydney parts warehouse is in Chullora, if the dealer doesn't have the parts required in stock. If they order the parts in, which then don't get used, they incurr costs to send them back to the warehouse.

The water pump on these is known to leak, but I'm not sure how it could cause any other issues with regards to sensors.

        Thanks.
There is also a parts warehouse in Brookvale but I guess this may just be their local stock.

This is the response I have just had.

        "
We need to carry out replacement of the water pump and pressure sensor before we can carry out regen,
Reason being is that we need to test the soot levels after its completed and it may not need a regen.

As discussed this morning I will need approval before I can go ahead and order these parts.
        "

I will see if I can find an independent, there is one in Mona Vale called European Autotech.

        Thanks

        Zeb

see if anyone local to you on the forum has a vcds cable they could loan you to do a forced regen. its pretty simple as i've done it recently on an audi a5 3.0 tdi so guess it would be a similar process but i could be wrong...

Not sure if the suggested way of forcing a REGEN that I used will help you but worth a try , go for a drive out of town put into third gear and drive for around 20kays at 80 kmh this sorted ours out as it also forces a Regen .

              Thanks Sunny,

I'm worried that i'm in the '75% dpf load, as I have the dpf, flashing coil and engine lights on. I am concerned that if I drive it more then it will clog more to the point I need a new DPF!

              Cheers

                You can't do a forced re-gen if there's pre-existing faults.

agreed, i think i read something along the lines of if the DPF is beyond certain limit already it will not allow a forced regen in case it results in failure of the dpf...

in any case a vcds cable would be handy to inform you of the values and allow a better decision making process on which way to go with the repair...

i feel your pain as i'm currently having blocked egr issues and resultant cels...

So went back yesterday to pick up the car. The service advisor got me to speak with the mechanic. He said that the water pump has leaked on to the EGR sensor and it's failed, so when he tried the regen it didn't work. So now I'm stuffed, have to have it all done, $2000.00. I am super pissxd off as i've only done 64k in the car, this shouldn't fail, it's got full service history too. They said they would contact VW Australia to see if they will come to the party, but I doubt it, they wouldn't even fix the rust on my roof rails well within warranty! So i've taken the car home and will await the answer from VW Aus.
My next decision will be to either take it back to the dealer or to a private vw garage. Not sure how much I would save. It also needs a service.
If I hadn't fully campered the vehicle I would sell it but I've invested too much in it.

                          Thanks Frantic.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Been talking to a VW specialist in Mona Vale. I'm just sick of dealers and specifically the fact that this particular dealer is locally renowned for using mostly apprentices and having a very high staff turnover combined with almost always 'finding extra things that are wrong', there are so many anecdotal stories I hear every time their name is mentioned.
