After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 2000 T4 petrol starting problem

    Hi all!!
I have been having a few problems since owning my 2000 T4 2.5 petrol AET!!

Mainly engine cutting out at traffic lights either the AC on!
After changing the PCV valve and pipe from there to the air intake, replacing both green and blue sensors, don't have the stalling issue!

The dramas i have now is the van coughs kn start up from cold, so I have to turn the engine off straight away!
If I restart the van it will fire up straight away no problem!
This is always when the van is cold!!

I have changed the fuel filter a few weeks ago but had the problem for ages!

Some Machanic mentioned maybe there is a faulty no return fuel valve in the fuel line somewhere!
    Any ideas?

    2. Second drama is the van hisses when cold with choke on as if there is an exhaust leak! It has done it since I owned it but got the exhaust checked out and there is no leaks, apparently the exhaust guy says all older VW that come in do the same , golfs Etc! Is this normal?

    3. Noisey tappets!! Never had noisey tappets before I got my timing belts replaced but maybe that's just a coincidence?
I have tried MANY types of oil like Penrite , Nulon, castrol Magnatec, from 10W 40/30 to now fully synthetic 5W40 premium stuff but still quite noisey! At least noisey to me be be to some , I only hear it because it was super quite when I first bought it! Are they hydraulic lifters or can they be adjusted??

I can't help you with most of your questions but can say they are hydraulic lifters. Are they noisy just on start-up or all the time?
If just on start up that can be normal until oil pressure lifts them to where they should be. My previous Mk2 GTI @ 160,000km would always rattle on start up & then go quiet. Apparently they can be dismantled & cleaned but most people just replace them.
How many Kms has your van done?
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

Thanks for the reply jets!👌😉 It's all the time really they are noisy!! They are not like diesel noisy just a little tappy all the time! Like I said but it never seemed to do it before the timing belt got changed! It's done 209000 KMS! I put some MORAYS oil additive this morning in fact and they seemed noticeably quieter on start up!! Not sure If this will fix the issue!
My initial starting problem is a concern and not sure where to start! Fuel one way valve or ecu not firing up fuel pump properly??
      I'm just guessing here! Lol

Hi Chiefster, I have a very similar problem to yours - sometimes starts really rough (usually in the morning but not necessarily) , turn it off straight away and try again and it runs like a dream - till yesterday that is, when it cut out at a tee-intersection and wouldn't restart. Had to wait 1 1/2 hours in the rain for a tow truck! RACV wouldn't send a mechanic as the spot was too dangerous. We got towed home and the mechanic that came out this morning reckons it's the fuel pump. Still won't start so I'll have to get it towed to the workshop unless anyone has an idea of what else it could be - a relay perhaps ??

          Check the relay I forgot which one but it is a known problem with the T4 {I know mine left me stranded a few times }

Anyone know which relay it is ??
Is it a relay for the fuel pump?
            is there a Jmac here?

relay number 30 is the BCM relay and relay number 167 is fuel pump relay , number 30 was the one that was killing mine .

                Yeah........change the relays first.
