After putting up with speeds 3 & 4 on my air con for too long I discovered that it may be the heater resistor. Quotes were a couple of hundred at least so a bit of googling and eBay searching I landed the part for $6.60 delivered.
Finally attacked the task yesterday, after loose instructions from a mate who'd replaced his in his Polo that it was located just behind the glovebox. Anyhow, didn't turn out to be that simple....it was located about halfway down the dash, I'd say arms length, at which stage you then had to remove 2 x 5mm bolts holding it in place, one which you could see, the other was just a guess!
End result, about 4 hours work, but on the plus side I now have working air con speeds 1 and 2 again, and I have the satisfaction of having done a job myself whilst saving a couple of hundred dollars!
Now apparently this is a VW problem, and the resistor resides in the air con ducting to keep it cool. Below is the link to the eBay part if anyone is experiencing the same problem. And of course I am happy to provide some pointers if anyone is contemplating a DIY job, just don't expect me to spend another 2 hours as a contortionist, that pleasure can be all yours! Oh, and I only lost 1 screw down the guts of the dash, so at least I know when that annoying rattle develops what the culprit was!
