Advice on replacement of DPF 2009 Tranpsorter

Hi All,

I have had my 2009 T5 (128kw tdi) Transporter at VW dealership yesterday to troubleshoot engine warning lights and was devastated to be told that the DPF is completely blocked and requires replacement at a cost of $5942.00 parts and labour.

I am hoping there may be other options available, rather than shelling out $6k for a repair.

I have been told that it is possible to chemically clean the DPF for around $500.00, however, there is no guarantee that this will be successful, but sounds like it is worth trying to me.

Any thoughts gentlemen?

if it weren't illegal a delete would be an option.

Personally, google the part number of the DPF and buy one online. Get it fitted and reset the ECU. Probably doable under $1000.

How many km on your van and where do you drive it? This has a massive impact on the life of a DPF. Short journeys just kill them.

1. Liquimoly DPF cleaning system, applied directly to the DPF via the O2 sensor port.

2. Western Filter can recondition the core, you just need experienced help to reset your DPF via Vag Com, that's the hardest part.

3. Buy a used DPF out of the UK or Germany, get them to cut it down to make the parcel smaller and put it on DHL 4 day air. Weld on the pipe from yours. I routinely see them from $400-$700.

4. Delete it and run the gauntlet. Places willing to do that are vanishing due to the fines imposed. You will have a constantly dirty back and the tailpipe will smoke more than you think, but power, response and fuel economy will all improve.

My T5, which I bought new, has just under 100,000 kms and in the last couple of years I have traveled mostly local suburban kms, with regular freeway trips, but not long distance driving.

This has been a great van, but I have to say that I am very disappointed with the life of the DPF, not to mention the repair quote.

I feel your pain Tombi makes you fume at the prices for something like a DPF , These vans can make you despondent very fast when it comes to repairs . If you look at what the van probably cost new approx. say $50000 then the DPF is now worth one tenth of the vans new price . I recently went through some very painful experiences to my wallet with repairs to our T5 . There were times that I had wished I broken the van up for parts as the cost of repairs and parts new were more than the van was worth !!

I was thinking precisely that regarding the purchase price in 2009 ($49K) versus the cost of repairing.

It does seem that there are some options other than the Dealer repair job, so I will investigate these options and hopefully will find one that is more suitable to my bank manager.

...also maintenance intervals and equally important to the length of the trips is what oil was used in the engine.

All servicing has been carried out at VW Dealerships in Melbourne and as per scheduled intervals.

Thanks Andrew. I have not searched for any parts myself as yet, however the dealer tells me that the Original VWrepalcement DPF part is around 4.5K

I have a 2006 Transporter with AXE engine code and I think you have a BNZ.

That's very cool, will be dearer than a euro eBay DPF, but at least it's a new core, and they can reset the ECU properly, the biggest hurdle. Other than that I'd be getting it pulled off, cut open and sent to Western Filter. Probably cost the same as one of those DPF sales new ones once you include labour to cut it out if you aren't a welder yourself.

The DPF has been replaced with an after market Euromax, which cost $1500.00 delivered to the dealer, who was happy to fit an after market part. However, I was told by the service manager, that the new DPF did require some " custom fitting" and was charged another $300.00 in addition to the $1400.00 labour cost to fit the DPF. Something apparently to do with sensor inlet angles!!!! I wonder.

Anyway, all seems good when driving and return to full power again.
