  • A/C system dilemma, need advsie!!

    Good afternoon,

I have now got further problems with my 2005 VW Transporter TDI!! After just spending a small fortune on getting the auto transmission sorted!!

I purchased a 2nd hand A/C compressor from ASV europarts back in February 2015. Unfortunately I was not able to get the compressor fitted before heading back overseas. I was not able to fit the A/C unit until my return December 2015

I got my local A/C engineer to fit the compressor mid December. On gassing the system he noticed that the A/C charging valve on the high side access port had a small leak, so he agreed to return to change the valve core and re-gas.

He managed to call over this morning to replace the charging valve on the high side access port and to re-gas the system.
(Was not in any rush to get A/C system fixed, as the van has not been in use for 5-6 weeks due to the auto gearbox problem)!

I also asked him to check the whole system for any further leaks, he noticed straight away that there was a leak on A/C compressor! Since his visit this morning, I have pin pointed the leak to one of the 6 or so small bolts that secures the clutch system onto the main A/C compressor unit. I loosened it to see if any more oil came out and sure enough a fair amount came out. So I have now re-tightened this bolt to see if this will fix the leak?

If this does not resolve the leak, then he suggested buying a new compressor as 2nd hand units are prone to leaks as the seals tends to perish if the compressor units are not in regular use!?

The A/C engineer could not figure out how to replace the A/C valve core in the charging valve. It seems that the valve core is not changeable/replaceable? His first recommendation was maybe the whole system would have to be changed - High side access point valve and gas hose!? He was not 100% on this, as he had not worked on a VW A/C system before this one.

So my question to everyone out there is:

Is it advisable to buy a new A/C compressor or just take another chance and get another used unit? Or is there anyone out there that can maybe repair, check seals etc.?

Regarding the A/C charging valve for the access port. What part is available/needed to fix the leaking valve? Or is it a case of having to change the whole access port along with hoses?

I am open to any suggestions for the best options to deal with these problems.

    Look forward to your replies!

    Thanks in advance!

P.S: I will shortly posting another question!..got yet more problems with the vehicle!!
