  • T5 AXE Turbo Oil feed lines

    Hi gang
I have a small oil leak. Been diagnosed as coming from the turbo lines. Not sure which one as they could not be viewed.
I also have an exhaust leak in same area which may have caused the problem due to heat.
I have read the article on how to remove the exhaust manifold & turbo. Looks pretty complicated.
I am wondering if anybody has replaced or repaired the Turbo lines without the manifold coming off. The exhaust leak is minor & doesnt bother me at this stage, but the oil is a real pain.
VW quoted $1400 labor only to remove & replace manifold, depending on what unfolded.
Thanks in advance for any help.

AFAIK there are no oil lines, the oil feed is built into the turbo with corresponding holes in the block.you have to remove turbo to fix leaks there.

Do the whole lot at once.

Weld up the manifold, and replace the oil feed/drain gasket at the same time. You pretty much need to pull the turbo out anyway, to get the manifold off.

I think my manifold is the cast one . its a late 2007 model. Can it be welded?

If it's a late '07, it won't be an AXE motor, it'll be a BPC.

If it's a cast one, they're usually just loose. New gasket there, and one for the turbo and you're done.

The stainless ones on the AXE can be welded. Done 3 or 4 now.

            Its definitely an AXE.
By loose, do you mean it requires tightening or dismantling & new gasket?
How many hours should it take to do the remove & refit?

If it's an AXE, it'll be the stainless manifold, which will need re-welding.

Hard to say how long one would take to R&R. I've done enough of them now that I know all the tricks, so I'd say maybe 4hrs for a first-timer.

                Are mechanical repairs your business?

I got a mechanic telling me around 12 hours r & R. Is he taking the piss or is he just not experienced & going in high hoping I go away?
He is a European specialist. Apperently & worked on T5's

Nah, you can turn them around in under a day's work.

Cost me 2 k for a replacement turbo to be fitted to our T5 , it ended up costing the workshop $1200 for the damage they did by lifting the van under the door seals instead of the lifting points .

No I managed to pick up second hand one from Jmac in Brissie it was in better nick than our old one . They had the van for a week or more but it did not take that long I think they knew they had damaged it and assumed I would be just glad to get it back and not see what they had done .
