Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • What powers the aircon compressor?

    I've just bought a 2006 Caravelle? I think.. 1.9 LWB
The aircon compressor is not working, we have worked that much out. We are trying to work out if the compressor is powered from the computer or from another control module.
Does anyone have any experience with aircon electrics?
    thanks
    john

I believe it's a dedicated module (near the battery?). The Denso units in Oz T4s were a local fitment rather than a factory fit.

I have the same problem on my 2006 Multi
The compressor is turning but not cooling.
I cant remember if an icon is suppoed to appear on the dash control readout to say if it is aircon mode,

Normally the air con button lights up when the air is on , there are no indicators on the dash . You should check all fuses and also relays to ensure its being powered also remember the air wont work unless the dash fan is on .For fuse and relay locations check here http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...9-a-32995.html There are two fuses for the Aircon so it pays to check BOTH .

The fan works and I have checked the fuses I can find.
Also the dampner on the compressor is turning?

Thanks people, I'll look into that, I'm still waiting for a working compressor to arrive. The first one didn't work.
Struggling this week with the 30 plus Temps in Sydney.

juat checked mine and the fans work and I can hear the fan behind the rear seat on the drivers side working but no cold air?
I have checked all the fuses on the card and there isnt a fuse near the battery even though others have said there should be, it was working?
Will try and take it somewhere to have a look tomorrow.

Try JM Auto Air 02 9718 2209. I told him what car and he knew which compressor.

Recently for my MK4 $350 compressor $40 receiver drier and $25 shipping to Brisbane
Fitted my self in about 3 hrs

You will need someone to take down and regas. Gas is on a credit basis and any extra you need is $150/kg, I needed 300g more than I had.

They never replied to the multiple emails I sent.
One phone call and the parts were in their way to me.

After umm and ahhing for a week and sending back a non functional 2nd hand compressor, my mechanic handballed it to VWvillage in Randwick. They did it it in a day, but cost twice his price. $1400 $700 of which was for a new compressor.
Now I can see the fan isn't working..... Started a thread about that too.
Jeez it's nice to have cold air though.

That dead fan may have been the cause of the failed compressor !
