  • Purchased T4 Winnebago now what to checkout.

Brother purchased a 1996 transporter 2.5 auto with winnebago motorhome.
Has 220,000km , with cam belt changed 80,000km ago , runs real well despite the heavier winnebago on the back.

So any advice what he should be looking at mechanically to replace to preserve the engine and gearbox.
Cam belt a must , what about water pump replacement like they normally do at same time to belt like vw Car range .

    Anything else appreciated.

Yes the pair go hand in hand always a wise move . the T4 is a pretty tough beast so it should serve you well . it was a shame VW dropped the 5 pot petrol engine in the T5 as it was a great engine .

Is there any service history with the motorhome? If not, don't wait to do an oil change on the trans, together with a new filter/strainer & sump seal. Try and establish whether the existing oil is genuine VW because you won't be able to drain the oil completely & the oils should not be mixed.
Do a full service including brake fluid change.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

Thanks Guys will let him know , good to know about the oils not to be mixed.
Found big difference on cam belts ranging from $125 to $255
Water pumps seem cheap at around $70
