Hi, my 1999 T4 synchro 2.5 Petrol (210 ks) sounds like a sports car atm. I think it may be a crack in the manifold, but not sure. There are no obvious holes or cracks elsewhere in the exhaust system, & the motor runs quite once warmed up & idling. But while driving it's obviously not too quiet. It's pretty hard to get to the manifold area on the synchro. Any suggestions, or advice on who could look at this for me? Newcastle or Coffs Harbour areas would be fine.

Gasket leak? Personally I've found the local exhaust specialists quite useful diagnosing problems with the exhaust system in mine. Yours being a petrol syncro makes it an unknown quantity for me...mine's a TDi. -
Any exhaust place should be able to take a look at it for you. Good luck getting parts though, my 2.5 petrol Syncro rear muffler has gone and I can't find a replacement for anything like a good price! I'm currently trying to source a full stainless system from the UK as it is still half the price of a custom build here!
Is it the rasping noise at about 4K rpm that's concerning you? I thought it was a faulty exhaust when I first got my van but quickly discovered that it is normal!T4 SYNCRO SWB x 2

Thanks for the replies. My mechanic says it nothing to be concerned about at this stage. I think i may need a replacement aftermarket catalytic converter at some stage tho.Has anyone had to do this? It's mainly noisy at startup but once warm its fine. Apparently the T4s do run a bit loud so I'm told? Apart from that it runs great, & is a pleasure to drive.Comment

The cat should be pretty easy to replace, just expensive! There are 3 bolts to the downpipe and a sleeved connection to the mid section... mine is currently soaking in WD40 so I can have a go at undoing the bolts tomorrow...T4 SYNCRO SWB x 2Comment
