I suppose I can put that down to my mistake at getting it replaced when I didn't need to - hopefully that means now with a genuine part put in by a genuine vw mechanic - that's one bit I shouldn't need to do again.

That is possible too - but as it seems no one else but me has had a problem with the passengers side - the fact that I changed the passengers side when I didn't have to - could well mean that is why I now have to replace it again.
Either way...I'll be paying

Just had a look on Ebay saw a couple of listings for the splines one from Latvia had the gap like the one in the photo and then there was one from Germany without the gap same as your new one ?????

Having always been a hopeless mechanic - and having the luxury of paying a mechanic being a business vehicle - and the first set of splines were changeover so I didn't get to see them - and the latest one hasn't been done yet.

I got mine from VW with a new shaft (updated).
The price wasn't too much more once you factor the freight and our fallen dollar.

Well...dropped mine off last week for the passengers side shaft to be replaced...again...but VW sent the wrong part...apparently...and there isn't one in the state (or was that country?...I wasn't listening well enough).

But then my new highly recommended vw specialist mechanic said he was expecting the modified shaft for the passengers side...I mentioned that from my previous experience there was only a modified shaft for the drivers side...he had no answer for this...nothing I can do about it now though...I've placed myself in his expert hands until such time as he proves that I shouldn't.

A lot of VW experts don't do too much work on Transporters, I've found.

But in this case every time I've been there, there are always 3 or 4 different transporters in the queue out the front...which is worrying in itself
And he reckons his old man has one too.
I suppose you can't know every detail about every vehicle.
His reviews on here are as good as I'm gonna find I reckon

ok - had my front passenger side drive shaft and stub axle replaced (for 2nd time in 18 months) - and the knocking noise I had is gone.
I had thought it must be the steering knock issue - but the vw mechanics diagnosis was correct.

He's always so rushed I didn't get a chance to chat when I picked it up - 2 people waiting behind me - he's always so busy
Anyway, I'm going to book in and pay for some of his time to discuss a range of things about my van so I will ask again then.
When he first pulled it apart (before realising the wrong parts had been delivered) he said he suspected non genuine parts had been used - but he also said he wasn't certain of that - I didn't ask about if grease had been used previously - I also didn't ask again about his earlier comment that the new splines would be modified but it was for the passengers side?
Almost a couple of years back when my drivers side broke - I got the passengers side done at the same time - believing the part would be modified - but it wasn't - when I didn't need it done - and now I've had to get it done again - oh well.

Also wanted to add that the steering feels tighter now...although that could just be my imagination.
It is a relief to be rid of that bloody knocking noise when turning the wheel at low speeds though.
