I am back looking at vans too. The Touareg is great but I miss the versatility of a van.

Currently looking at the Iveco and small Sprinter too.

4WD is not a deal breaker in my case.

EDIT: Re the original post, my sale price did not cover the cost of the gear (factory, OEM, aftermarket, service items) that went with the van. Kombi Beach had ~60K on the clock. The van had no trade in value. It was the worst depreciation of a motor vehicle I have ever experienced in over 25 years of motoring.

In contrast, the 2011 SLK200 I ran for a year immediately afterwards (I wanted/needed a change) sold for exactly the price I originally paid - with an additional 12K on the clock!

That's be something of a monster!! And a bit of a bargain if it comes in for a similar/better price to the dual cab version...

      However...I do like this conversion

Would love to get brief feedback after your test. Got my T5 back today, brand new starter motor so now instant starting plus superior smoothness of the conventional older six speed auto makes me think the van manufacturers are not trying too hard to make me change over, lol. I would love the engine of the Vito 122, auto of Amarok (8sp ZF), 4x4 driveline, T5 body, a new interior that doesn't charge a ransom for BT, rear camera/sensors etc....and I would be the proverbial "pig in a poke".
After road testing Crafter on Tuesday it was time to take Iveco35 for a quick test drive this afternoon. The first impression was good the cabin and the seat felt comfortable, the noise level while on the move was much less than in the Crafter, but not as good as in the Sprinter. The steering column has telescopic adjustment but it can't be tilted towards the driver and driving position is more like driving a truck compared Crafter and Sprinter. The turning circle is reasonable but the ride quality is not as good as the Sprinters, the test van was automatic and the dynamics were more like a Isuzu small truck that I had hired couple months ago. The 2.3L was quite responsive while already on the go, it was mainly when starting to drive and at the parking speed that the auto transmission didn't do best job.

So, since I was already there and the dealer offered, I took 4x4 Iveco for the test drive as well. The 3.0L engine accelerated the single cab chassis quite fast and before I new it, I was doing +90km/h. I loved the driving position very much. The 6speed manual gearbox managed the engine torque really well. This 4x4 Iveco had all 3 diff locks and 2 reduction gears. If I'd be after the camper, I'd certainly build one on the Iveco chassis.

Thanks for the update. I'm off test driving both Iveco next week too.

The fuel consumption of the 4x4 is the only thing turning me off that model.

A couple mates are working on a Unimog. Refueling that beast requires a company fuel card... $$$

This is what I've found too with the auto transmission on the parent's Iveco motorhome - quite slow and 'odd'. I'd have to have the manual.

Now, I have to wait for the new Iveco till September, but most likely I'll try to hold back and wait for a new Crafter, hopefully at the beginning of 2017. It's a lot of money to buy a van now and again in 2.5 years. The resale value is not what it was 10 or more years ago.
