DMF issues; glowplug light

I suspect the 2008 T5 1.9TDI 5 speed I just purchased has a Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) issue/failure
it has 150K on the clock.

it is ex-fleet and i got it cheap at an auction, i thought i had done my homework as it didnt have driveshaft/turbo/waterpump issues actually the waterpump had been changed. as had the brakes, timing belt and only a few hundred K's previously, the Clutch/Flywheel (done by a small shop in sydney who was servicing the whole fleet). the mechanic there was helpful and advised that the van had no synchro in first, which didnt bother me too much.

Driving it for the first time after purchasing it (cant test drive these auction cars) i noticed clunking and WEIRD grinding when i stopped at the lights. also some vibration was evident on the pedal when i pushed the clutch in a bit

I got it back to Canberra and the noise is gone now. although there is still some vibration on the clutch.

Looking online it sounds like it probably has DMF failure. this is strange because it had just been done (invoice for $2400 for clutch, flywheel, R/R gearbox) so i will talk to the guy that did the work.

another small issue, The Engine light was on, which shows up on my ipad/VAG scan as a glowplug circuit issue. it resets and goes away and the thing starts ok cold. light came back today. hopefully its a bad earth or something.

trying to decide wether to get it fixed or bail on it.

Anyone had experience with DMF's?

I have exactly the same van, with the exact same problems, although I believe mine still has the original clutch in it.

I've gone as far as putting new glow plugs in it, but I'm sure it's a wiring problem now.

The clutch needs doing, but I'm yet to price up a kit for it. I'll be doing all the work myself.

Did you reset the light with a scanner? the light will stay on until its reset.
The glowplugs are fairly high-current.. so they are susceptible to connectors overheating/failing. apparently the relay is a good place to start.

I considered doing the clutch/flywheel myself.i just dont think i will have the time and dont have a good space to do it.. need to find a good workshop to do it.
Are replacing the DMF as well as the clutch? maybe we can get a deal on 2 of them.

Yeah, I can clear it, but it comes back within a couple of days. I'm not too stressed about it as it's done 12,000 km in my hands like that so far.

I'll have a chat to a couple of suppliers about the clutch prices. Id like to move away from the DMF, but I'm concerned the stripped stub shaft issue will rear it's ugly head. Might have to keep one on board as a spare! Easy enough to change on the roadside.

I just drove this one again and it seems fine. maybe its fixed itself

That vibration just as you put some pressure on the clutch is normal. It happened with my MY05 and my MY13 does it a little too. Have driven others and they were the same.

Richie, mines a white van, but I know of the ones like yours, I looked at a couple before I bought mine. Mechanically the same.

I know for sure my DMF is dodgy as trying to reverse is a bugger , I can generate some other strange effect going forward under load say up a hill with plenty of acceleration . But as its been the same for a few years I will leave it alone , I did replace my clutch a couple of years back after 180.000 kays but did not do the DMF as I did not know at the time about the mongrel or I would have replaced it with solid one the DMF are only good for diesels anyway as it supposed to smooth out the throb a diesel engine makes .

I want to dump the gearbox oil out of mine. see if that fixes my synchro a bit. anyone know where to get a 17mm allen key/allen socket?
