  • Multivan and Manual Transmission

    Hi

Why in Australia can't you get a manual transmission on a Multivan?

I would much prefer a manual gear box and I know that you get them in other RHD markets eg the UK.

They are cheaper than the DSGs that are available and they are more reliable. I know that a lot of people have had a lot of trouble with the DSGs 2005 to 2009. I am not sure about the more recent ones.

Or is it actually possible to get a manual through special order?

The mass DSG problem does not affect the DSG in the Multivans.
The problematic DSG is the DQ200, installed in the smaller engined passenger cars.
The Transporter/Multivans are fitted with the DQ500 DSG.

I don't know why you cannot order a manual Multivan.

I was disappointed when the Mk7 Golf was released that manual trans was not available with the diesel engine but was told was still available in the Tiguan. Now that I am interested in buying a Tiguan the manual has not been available with the diesel since the start of this year. The reason given is lack of demand in Aust.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

VW really needs to start following the BMW model .... you can order most BMW's in a manual on a special order basis if it is available in that model in RHD form overseas. Some exceptions do apply though.

As an example, all new 3 series BMWs are standard 8spd autos now, however on a special order basis you can for the same price order a manual instead and then wait for it to arrive. Those of us who order our VWs specially built (like me) will be no worse off ....

If I could get a manual TSI Multivan today, I'd buy it, same price as a DSG don't care, just give me the option.

All VW has achieved with their current operating model is a lost customer. From now on, unless I can buy what I want in a manual, I'll shop elsewhere and with current sales and poor reputation I don't think VW can afford to loose many loyal customers (VW #11 likely to be my last VW).

I would agree with you Sharkie on the manuals being more reliable with only the one exception I do not like the DMF why did VW just carte blanche fit them to all models when they were specifically built to absorb the throb of a diesel engine . My work van had almost destroyed the DMF at only about 40.000 kms , I tried to reverse up a hill but the van struggled as its only a 2 .o litre petrol so now 180.000 km,s later it is still going but reversing is a real art form of engine revs and clutch slip to get anywhere . God knows how VW expect any one to reverse with the maximum load on board ,even our new T5 with a DSG shudders if I try to reverse out or driveway and then up the hill a short distance .

I'm not even concerned that much about the reliability (or not) of the DSG, Howard, I just prefer a manual gearbox and VW should offer me the option.

Yes I agree again the problem for us Aussies is that people who think they know better than us make these decisions and we have to cop it , it seems that we are such a small market for VW [and shrinking] that volume dictates supply needs .

I love a good manual, but some of VW manuals are not great: I had 2 manual Tiguans (Tdi and Tsi) and both manuals were not great: rubbery, sloppy, mushy, imprecise, slow. Certainly, no "rifle-bolt" style of action.

Felt like VW was economising building certain manuals. If a manual like that would be in a Multivan, it would not be more satisfying than a DSG.

The rubbery was probably the DMF its a real bitch . Using springs to absorb engine torque is not really a good idea compared to a solid flywheel its a rocket launch with tyre burning or with DMF more softness than a man with erectile dysfunction

So we have this forum as a lobby group. Let's use it. I agree that as consumers we should be able to buy the manual product that we want.
This would also allow us to sidestep any issues with dsg. Come on Vw, give the consumer a choice.

I agree with you Sharkie and don't know how long I will wait for the successor of the T5 with a decent engine? Of course with a manual box. I know that the Vito is coming next year with the AWD version and has a fantastic V6 CDi engine. Surely this should put some pressure on VW to start offering V6 TDI in the commercials vehicles. I'm not buying onto their environment excuse, especially when they build the passenger car Audi A5 with V6 TDI.
