You do a lot of DSG dumping, for someone that does not own one.

I drive one everyday. Mine has none of the issues or problems you speak of.

As for the overtaking story you mentioned, this can happen with any automatic transmission. If dropping down gears etc is a concern, then just flick the shifter to the right so you are in manual mode......not hard really.

Don't get me wrong, I know of many horror stories from Golf/Caddy/Polo owners. To the point where I am now in the market for a new Golf, but I will not be buying a DSG model. I am kinda hooked on the Bluemotion model, which only comes with a 5 speed manual.

Look I agree totally with your comments I suppose the problems I have been having with our current triptronic has made me more aware of what the future holds as we certainly will be getting a new one sometime down the track , and if it wasn,t for the my wife needing an auto I suppose a manual would be first choice . I would also agree that not veryone has a problem with their vans I have read with interest some of the common problems other owners have experienced and thought to my self well ours did not have that problem so it pans out . The Golf etc certainly is a very popular model all over the world so the high numbers would certainly show up a higher degree of disgruntled owners when a problem occurs . With relation to the over taking problem story If I am not mistaken the DSG will not allow over revving as it will apparently force change just before redline what happens if it cannot change I am not sure maybe a rev limiter would cut of engine power at that time which maybe what the guy was alluding to .

As I've said before/elsewhere ... other than the lag issue (which I feel has been at least partly dealt with in my case thanks to the above mentioned "fix") the box is great - one can just about play tunes on the ruddy thing if you're not averse to playing with the selector lever ... I suggest experimenting - particularly with the "S" position.

Even easier if you have the paddle shift on the steering wheel.

Agreed: I had a ride in a Multivan over the weekend and it certainly makes our van look very "commercial" in its interior appointments.
The Multivan put me in mind of the level with which some/most of the Delicas are fitted out.

Sorry IN2VWS I admit I have been quite harsh about VW autos across the board for some time as I have said I love the VW vans its just their autos that I am upset about , If wanted a manual I would have bought one for my wife but she only has an auto license . I did not want a manual combo auto configuration all I can see is a complicated auto with too many components that can and do fail , why not a straight automatic with no manual mode it just does not make sense in a two ton van to try and make it sporty . If I owned a golf yes the sport mode would be fun but not in a van , and if I am not mistaken VW are now contemplating an 8 speed auto I know its progress in technology but its the consumer who ends up paying for it and the development costs keep it simple and reduce the cost and sell more products thats my tilt on things , the way things are going in the car industry the future will be that we open the car by our presence and sit down and let it drive us to our destination where,s the fun and skill in that . I like to think I am in control of my vehicle and that I am considered smart enough to drive without some computer thinking for me or trying to predict what I will do next or what gear it thinks I want {DSG} Here ends todays sermon .

OK chaps & chapesses ... here we go.
A couple of thousand kms after the tweak carried out on my T5 DSG 132kw (see my earlier posts) I venture to offer the following: the reduction in lag from either a standing start or a slow rolling situation is minimal - so slight as to be barely discernable ("...am I imagining the improvement, or is it real?").
The bottom line for me re the subject of this thread ... based on my experience so far - I wouldn't go for DSG next time (if in fact there is ever another VW "next time" - see my other comments re NVH with respect to our camper).
A shame, as the engine side of the rig is brilliant for a 2 litre diesel four... heaps of grunt for towing our veteran car in its trailer.

I then did some more research and this one came up Quote/
[In August 2009, Volkswagen of America issued two recalls of DSG-equipped vehicles. The first involved 13,500 vehicles,[23] and was to address unplanned shifts to the neutral gear,[23] while the second involved similar problems (by then attributed to faulty temperature sensors) and applied to 53,300 vehicles.[23][24][25] These recalls arose as a result of investigations carried out by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),[26] where owners reported to the NHTSA a loss of power whilst driving.[23] This investigation preliminary found only 2008 and 2009 model year vehicles as being affected.[23][26] Other markets, such as Volkswagen group Australia, are yet to admit this being a widespread issue and refuse to offer similar recall programs as their US counterparts, even though multiple reports of similar incidents and failures have occurred.]end quote .
Now it seems to me that we here in Australia are being treated with a bit of contempt by VW AU what do you think , I look forward to your comments . and PS I don,t own a T5 with a DSG so I don,t have a personal axe to grind on this one .

Only last week i had 3 incidents with an unplanned upshift to Neutral. I was going to Canberra from Batemans bay over the range very steep with many bends and every time i came to a hairpin bend when the gearbox was changing to a lower gear it left me in Neutral half way around the curve,i had to quickly use the paddles to find a lower gear as there were cars behind me,
When that happens it gives you a wake up call imagine if there was a car up your backside .

in america, people who had dual mass flywheels in their dsg's replaced with new units, recieved... well, new units, with a new part number and everything.

there is interesting reading on tdiclub regarding the dsg dual mass flywheel failures. go to the diesel section of this forum and look for my thread "is your dsg dying, or just your dmf?".

i personally dont see what all the fuss is about - i've driven dsg on a few occasions and i honestly didnt think the gear change was as quick as people/ the media would have you believe - not only were the cars notchy from take off, there was also a noticeable gear change lag between driver input and the gears actually changing imo.
given that i know how to, and am physically capable of, driving manual, i personally wouldnt touch DSG with a barge pole... not until VW sorts their isht out, and ESPECIALLY not in the current climate where VWA apparently seem to have a hit and miss policy with their dealerships with regards to who will be willing to acknowledge that hmmmmm, yes, dsg's to screw up, and that parts do need to be replaced, and no, that whirring sound in second gear is not "within tolerance".
iv just come out of a subaru liberty that had a 5 speed auto that is tweaked by STI and the defference in gearchange speed is chalk and cheese. my 7 speed is ten steps ahead ill admit that the ZF boxes a very good for a "auto" box but to say there is lag in the shifts is ridiculas. The lag is in the tune if you drive in manual mode there are no dramas.

I'm speaking here of my own personal; experience with our particular vehicle.

1)...the only problem insofar as the lag/delay issue is involved is either from a standing start or a slow speed rolling requirement for quick response. In all other respects I quite like the DSG's behaviour & am happy to live with it.
2)...I have NEVER had the box slip into neutral. Repeat ... never.
3)...I have never, repeat never, had any "whirring sounds" such as are mentioned above.
4)...despite my advancing years, I am quite capable of using the DSG gear selection system and in fact thoroughly enjoy switching from "D" to "S" and/or flicking it up or down "manually" to utilise engine braking, etc.

To repeat: my only gripe with the DSG is the lag/delay issue which has been my experience with the DSG as fitted to my vehicle. So saying, I am not suggesting that all other driver experiences with the various makes & model vehicles fitted with DSG in one or other of its forms will be the same.
So ... beware over generalisation when putting s**t on the DSG box.

I might be wrong, but I think some of the posts above are from Golf owners, not Transporter owners.
I am not aware of Transporter owners having the same problem that passenger vehicle owners are having.

                          Further to the DSG topic......
I was talking to my local dealer, whom I do trust for his honesty......I asked if there any issues with the DSG in Transposters like the Passenger car guys are having. He was not aware of any, but he also pointed out that they are different.
The Transporters DSG is more heavy duty, and they have a wet clutch. The passenger cars are a dry clutch.

Also worth noting that in the past, VW always had said the DSG is sealed for life.......I know with my MY11 Transporter it is on the service schedule to change the transmission fluid etc. at 60,000 km.
