T5 with DSG and multi function steering wheel question

So the new DSG Wheel was shipped in 2 bits last week, 1 being the wheel itself and 1 being the airbag.

Wheel arrived today and it is brand new and more importantly, it does indeed have the DSG paddles. Very impressed so far. Pics soon ....

And the airbag arrived today .... brand new as well. Awesome service from the seller in Portugal. Onto Jmac now to get it fitted ......

Did you have much trouble getting the airbag off? Any tips to share in doing this, as I'd like to get mine done this weekend (if its easy enough) otherwise Jmac can only slot me in on the 13th of August and the wait will kill me.

Airbag came off easily.
Here are some pics that might help.
It is recommended to disconnect your battery when doing this, but I didn't.

1. turn steering wheel 90 degrees. With the steering wheel adjustment, tilt the wheel all the way down and pull it out as far as it will go.
You will need a short screwdriver to lever the spring clips that hold the airbag onto the wheel.
Once one clip is undone, rotate the steering wheel 180 degrees, and do the same to the other clip.
Once this was done, I centered the steering wheel with the engine running (otherwise it was difficult to turn the steering wheel without the powere steering).
I then switched off the engine and removed the key, and let the van sit for half an hour (to make sure there was no power going anywhere (radio, dash etc.)





You will have to unplug the rectangular yellow plug from the steering wheel. To do this, you will see a white-ish part on the top of the plug. Slide this back towards yourself, and then he yellow plug will come out.
You will need one of these to get the steering wheel off:


Fitting is the reverse of what you just did.

What size is that Hex key? I can't find 1 ..... Jimmy had to postpone my fitting so I'm going to have a go provided I can find a toolset like that ....

in my van I have a rcd510 + touch BT kit. the phone button just mutes the stereo so not fully phone integrated. it's also a manual and I have no wizz bang dash display. If I get a wheel with the volume and phone buttons (on the left?) only, will it work with me van?

It is 12mm.

I don't think it will work, as the wiring may not be there for it.

Got my spline socket yesterday and installed the wheel today. Looks beautiful.

However, DSG paddles don't work yet. I knew it wouldn't as when we coded the RNS510, we specifically checked that the MF steering wheel option with tiptronic shift was not enabled on Vagcom. All the other buttons work perfectly.

I'll get that coded during the week. Will need to clear the a/bag error code as well, as I started the car without the a/bag plugged in and the error light popped up.

Cool, you love it with the paddles enabled.
I was surprised at how much I use the paddles. Once you get use to them, It'll be hard to go back to a van without them.

IMO, they should be a standard option on the Multivans etc.

Looks like my 103TDI MV does not have control module 16 - Steering wheel.

Can anybody with VAGCOM and a 103TDI do a module scan and see if module 16 - Steering wheel is there?

and for interest sake,

Need to play with Vagcom a bit more as initial quick checks had us clear the a/bag warning light no problems, but could not find the setting to enable the DSG paddles ....

Did your van have MFD or a Multi function steering wheel originally?
My understanding is, if your van does not have these originally, the controllers and wiring will not be in place to retro fit them.

Yes, both MFD and MF Steering wheel were factory fitted.

Also, in 02- Auto Trans, there is a checkbox with MF Steering wheel fitted = ticked.

Had a look thru my VCDS, and I cannot find anything to do with steering wheel paddles.

That might help - certainly no steering wheel controller (module 16)
