    well its time to get new rubber, have done 75k with the original michellin

    read all the threads but don't seem to get a good answer as to what is the BEST

    the Maxxis sound like good value ??
    I got a quote on them for @ $215 for maxxis vanpro
    and $259 for the Goodyear (aust post use these)
    and $280 for the Yokohama RY818 (couriers choice)
    and $310 continental (vw dealer)
    and $155 for a Hi Fly???

    my michellin tore up too but I was told that is a VW thing??

    i was very happy with them but they want about $380 to replace (vw dealer)
    I want good mileage, ride and no noise, is that asking too much

      I would go by twr (tread wear rating) you should see it on the tyre sidewall - close to the tread.

        Hi Tapsy,

        I've got about 15K on my Bridgestone 693's now and am pretty happy with them. Just had a service today and they were measured (tread depth 6 and 8 mm; 8mm is practically the new measurement I believe) and rotated. They seem not quite as firm on the bitumen as the original Michi's (subtle difference though), but probably better off-road. At $200 each they were good buying, even as a road tyre. My Michi's also cut up a bit off-road, but it didn't seem to affect either life or grip. Took them off at 75K and I reckon they still had 5-10k left. I'd have had the Michi's again if I hadn't wanted the A/T tread, at a quote of $300 each at Jax about a year ago. ($380 is steep).
        Interestingly, I also think I've dropped a little in fuel consumption since the change (not scientifically measured, but guesstimate up to 0.5L/100k). May, or may not be down to the tyres, but may compensate for the higher price of the Michi's.

        So my view; Michi's are probably worth the price (if around $300) if you want a tough road tyre, or the Bridgestones are good value if you're are attracted to an A/T pattern.

          went for the Maxxis vanpro UA-103 that BrianJ is running,
          drove home from the shop, felt very good with no noise, still have highway driving yet but so far so good
          there seems to be 10mm of tread !!

            When I was buying I had never heard of Maxxis, and the man said I will get one and show you, well the tread was awesome, I decided to get them on the spot.

            Out of curiosity, I just went and measured the tread remaining on my set that have done 60,000km which I swapped front to back at about 50,000km.

            Tread depth centre tread:
            Front 7mm (was back)
            Rear 3.5 (was front)

            That is why I suspect they will last longer than 100,000km.

            P.S. They travel very well on the highway at speed, and are also surefooted on a wet road.

                I can't see anything like TWR, but there are some numbers which might fall into the right range or be recognisable:
                There is the speed load rating of 109/107T
                UYHC ABC 5109
                some symbol 5814
                V1

                Does any of this make any sense?

                  109/109 is load rating
                  T is speed limit

                  Some tyres don't have it. I think that it is required in US, so if the the tyres is for AU market they don't have to advertise, sometimes they don't want to. I will definitely try Maxxis next time, on my T5.

                    i have all that same guff too , can't see nything about TWR, did noticed that it says 70kpa do you still go by the VW pressure inflations?

                      We have been running Nangkang Toursport NS tyres on all 3 of our vans for the last five years , they are correct load rated we get average 40,000 to 60,000 with regular rotation [admits here that he forgets some times to rotate] Priced around $180-$200 per tyre they give good grip across all conditions , we did have an issue with a couple of tyres last year delaminating and even after 30.000 ks they gave us 2 new ones free of charge not bad I thought . howard

                        I think that is the maximum before they explode!!

                        All round I use 45PSI (cold).
                        For interstate trips I may raise this to about 50PSI (hot)
                        In very hot weather these two statements would probably be about the same.

                          45 Psi seems high sorry to ask? but we run ours at 38 across the board as for 50 psi in summer here in Qld they would get awfully hot and would be subject to harsh ride levels , maybe I,m wrong Howard

                            Depends on the ride you want, sunny, and the weight

                            My last T4 had around 700kg static (2.5 ton all up) and I'd always have firmer shockers and run the tyres close to 50psi

                            That suited the van and load well, and I liked the ride

                            The T5 I'm in now, at around 2.4 ton with a little bit extra on board, I much prefer with standard shocks (just fitted some new Bilsteins) and the tyres I run at 45psi

                            To me that feels right

                            So it depends on your ride, and what you're chasing

                            But more importantly, get to know at what psi your tyres are wearing evenly between middle and shoulders

                              It is a fairly hard ride, but ours carries a bit of camping gear all the time so its ok with 45. Actually the lower the pressure the hotter the tyre gets due to flexing friction in the rubber, plus the rolling resistance is higher so less fuel economy which is the main reason I put them up to 50 on trips.

                              Ours wear out evenly accross the tread and we're looking at getting 100,000km from our current set of maxxis, so its worth a slightly harsh ride.
