Don't forget there is that nasty thing called DMF in there as well , if it lets go at speed they can shatter the whole gearbox housing . From reports the DMF should be done in tandem with a clutch kit , but I did not know that when I did mine and its still in there now with an extra 100000 on the clock since then . I have just leant to not get in a position where I would need to reverse backwards up hill .

Do you mean if it lets go or reversing ? apparently the large outer springs in the DMF can fail and then at speed the whole thing can smash the outer gearbox housing . Now since mine was never replaced I find reversing uphill will result in shuddering on a grand scale , I need to allow a certain amount of clutch slipping to get the van out of a position when I am reversing . These days I always try and roll backwards in to a spot so I can drive out forwards .

          Ahh...right.
          I have no shuddering.
only a rattling sound.........mainly when the clutch is engaged.

Sounds like a throw out bearing , just try it in neutral in your driveway push clutch in and out to hear the noise . They get pretty rattily when on their last legs as the bearings have no lube left and will kill themselves pretty quickly .

The rattling is rare in neutral, like it might just be slightly touching the pressure plate...........but significant with you push the clutch in.

              Edit - Just reading this - http://data.autorepairmanuals.ws/773...e9d2f04b4f2279
From page 18.........it says that there is preloading so the bearing is spinning at all times but it will obviously be noisier under load.

There is that expression again I noted that "The Clutch release bearing is "sealed for life " with grease " so they expect it to never need replacing or wear out maybe . It's the same old story car makers test their products but can never match the "real world "conditions so we become their testers for components that fail .
