  • tried it out on the rear bumper, late 2014, first.
Rear still looks ok, could do with a refresh, but haven't bothered. It's not bad enough yet, still better than the bare weathered look as above

    • There are a couple of products for the bumpers one is Back to Black more for the T4's which have black ones , then there is a Turtle product for the grey ones its more of a a clear revival coat works quite well you can get quite a few months before needing to be redone .

      • I use a product from Meguiar's called ultimate protectant [dash & trim restorer] on the black bumpers of my T4. The previous product was called trim detailer. It's white as it comes out but can be used for black or grey plastic & rubber.
It works well but would say it's more for maintenance rather than restoration.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

Had one of the passenger electric window regulator cables go bang recently, jamming up(cable frayed at end) and breaking the plastic window clamp in the process.
Tried VW for the clamp first. "Not available as a separate part" according to the parts guy."We can sell you the whole regulator for $325 though". Pass.
Ebay from UK Window Regulator repair kit $20 delivered. Two clamps plus cables(luckily, as i needed one) plus few other bits.
Just fitted it all, everything works again.Only hard part was refitting the cables, ended up being a two person job.Made up a tool to help compress the cable springs. The cables have to be very TIGHT.
If you ever need to do this, i wound the cable drum first and fitted it, then fed the cable, after compressing the springs, over one of the pulleys.

          • Today I mounted our new pedelec bicycles in our van, we can't get our camper conversion done (thanks to Covid) so we may as well use it to transport the bikes...

Need to take it for a decent spin to bead in the brakes

                    • Must be the season I just did ours a couple of weeks back with a set of Brembo,s as well . They grab like a vice when stomped on .

                      • Hey Peter, I wish it took 10 minutes to do all that, but at least its all done, and i ill be ready for another adventure when the time comes.

I'll do a dump run today to recycle the oil and rotors and bead the brakes a little more.

Sunny, i haven't had a chance to stomp them yet, but so far from driving to get the tyres fitted they are an improvement over the original pads.

It'll be interesting to see how they last.

                        • and two years later the drivers side electric window goes ...pppiiinnnggg!!
Two years ago the passenger side had a similar failure (see post 109)
Anyway, replaced a damaged cable and broken slider, from the old spares kit, and we're in business again. At 195K km

Had a N90 solenoid go in the auto. Stuck in 3rd gear till i could get it in to be replaced. All fixed.

Few weeks back, finally fixed my air vent control (only been a couple of years!!), as it only came out the dash vents no matter where the dial was turned. Cable mount broken.
What a PITA to do. Removed glovebox and centre dash panel ok.To get access to the mount required removing a steel ventpipe bracket. Two bolts were virtually inaccessible to me, i resorted to a small socket and pliers. That was fun!

And VWs' idea of a half turn plastic cable mount sucks, no wonder they break.

                            • On my 5th t5 now, and all vent control dials either butchered or busted in different ways... lashing the half turn cable mount with 3 small cable ties in different directions also using a solid core heater cable has worked so far.. . I'm hearing ya!!

                              • yeah, i used the solid core cable, but don't think it is absolutely necessary. It's just the mount is poorly designed IMO
