Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Great job Rebuild!

I tried to prise off the plenum cover when I did the wiper upgrade. I ended up chickening out as the clips just did not want to pop loose... and VW plastic is pricey - even from the wreckers

Took mine off on the weekend as had to access the top bolt for strut removal , its a wonderful location for leaves to accumulate and decay and start a rust spot .

Good job Rebuild not many owners clean the Plenum Chamber or know how to.

My trick is to not park under trees but you can't always avoid them.

To follow on from what we done to our VW as you all would probably know I put a new clutch kit into the van on Sunday strange thing was after refitting and test driving the engine developed a strange sort of hesitation when coasting if you let it at low speed it would quickly become a kangaroo hop effect . This continued on Monday driving into the city to do some work and also on the way home , again Tuesday morning it was doing it again then in the afternoon for the trip home miracle not happening . Again today still no problem , I was at a customers house repairing his sunroof and I happened to mention the problem from the other day , quick as a flash he whips out one of those Tech 2 devices and plugs it in , instantly it shows 2 fault codes 16705 exhaust gas recirculating system and 17000 EGR Valve Current Circuit Electrical . I have no idea how these occurred but he cleared the faults which got rid of the engine light so whatever triggered them has sorted itself out " weird "

Installed cruise control kit to our T4 camper today. It's been sitting in my shed for over 12 months, been a bit worried about removing the airbag & my failing eyesight. My son said he would give me a hand so today was the day. Activated it with Vagcom myself & it works perfectly. Cruise was fitted to my previous T4 & it was the main thing I missed when I bought this one. If anyone with a T4 is interested in doing this themselves, I may do a writeup in the sticky "T4 DIY How to"

Yes, we had trouble finding that plug but thanks to t4tradie on this forum back in '08 who said "I found the plug pushed behind the floor mat" That was the same place we found ours.

Haha, never heard of it being pushed behind the floor mat. Who is supposed to find it there?

To be honest your previous post motivated me to get my lazy arse in gear and install the new stalk. Took me a while to find the matching plug, but hey it was there, hiding behind a big loom coming from somewhere above it.

A few months back I removed the EGR valve assembly and partially cleaned into the intake manifold, as far as i dare reach with an old hacksaw blade.Lots of gunk.Blocked off the EGR on reassembly.

Thinking worse was further down, i have just recently removed the intake manifold to find it relatively clean. There was some sludge but not a lot. Most seemed to sit approx 50-100 mm back from intake ports on manifold, but still not a lot.

Soaked it in petrol and LPG flamed it afterwards
Removal of the manifold is easy once access is gained(the hard part).

Cleaned the intercooler internally and pressure cleaned the aircon condenser, and the radiator.A fair few locusts and bugs
The alternator torsional coupling has about 1mm freeplay

Tricked the old LWB T5 up a bit ... Put some chrome door handles on all round and a chrome cover on the rear license plate light cover.

Put some Amarok wheel trims (with the shiny VW symbols on them ) on the OEM steel rims (look better than the plain black wheel nut covers) .. put the chrome grill covers on the existing grill surrounding the VW symbol at the front .. put a couple of chrome surrounds around the side indicators.

I'll soon be putting on a couple of VW performance stickers on the rear tailgate when then turn up from the UK.

And the grand finale ... VW insignia tyre valve caps and number plate screws ..... so much bling I cant believe it

Oil and oilfilter change at 135K
Finally decided to change the airfilter too.Pretty sure it was still an original in there as it had an 04 build date.Old one wasn't real bad.
New filter has an extra "A" designation on the part no. and has a coarse foam overlay stuck to the outer, plus a strengthening rib on the underside.Airfilter was only around $45.
