So its Sunday afternoon and of course i have a problem with my work van! a 2003 T4 with the 2.5 ltr petrol motor, been driving around today no problem, went to pick up my son and the van starts but won't run, Did this 2 days a go for a bit but then cleared it self, Now it will fire up run for about 3 seconds and dies like the ignition is shutting off. It has a new distributor 5 months ago, new plugs 2 months ago, new fuel filter last month, plenty of fuel to the injectors, I popped off the fuel line and petrol pumped out everywhere! I'm sure there are 101 sensors to regulate if a Bee sneezes on it, but my guess is one of them is not shutting off once the motor ignites Im just buggered if i know where to start looking, Any suggestions, Ray

Plug a scanner into the OBD port and see what its tells you is going on. Sounds like it might be an intermittent immobiliser or ignition switch issue perhaps? But unless its a ridiculously common issue on these cars, its literally impossible to diagnose without some diagnostic reports.

Ok I had the same problem with my T4 many years ago , turned out to be a relay that would do what you described . Mine would just stop when sitting at lights and I would leave it in gear and use the starter to get it off the road . I was at our VW dealer and asked them to find out what was wrong but as it was running at that time they couldn,t help , just then one of the spare parts guys came to the counter and said it was relay as it was known problem {pity the service reception didn,t know about it } I picked up and fitted the new relay and it never did it again . Now from memory its relay number 109 , but its been a long time so might be best to wait and see if someone can confirm it or check with local VW person .

Ahh yes some one else said Relay 30 was problematic for the engine cutting out all together, though it was sorted towed to muy mechanic wednesday, my mechanic put the laptop on it and said the sender unit on the Key (the black sensor ring thats around the key hole ) was sending a weak signal and he soldered a loose joint and traced it to the imobiliser box, ALL GOOD...... OR SO I THOUGHT, ITS BEEN PISSING DOWN HERE IN SYDNEY AND I DROVE TO WORK THURSDAY THEN IT WOULDN'D START TO GO HOME. All the electrics kept blanking out , would sort of turn over but this time waS NOT FIRING, the clock reset to 0:00 and there was water on the floor, I left it thought maybe something has got wet and shorted out, I came back Friday in my wifes car and the bloodly thing started first hit!! drove around for work all day, got home and this morning same symptoms as Monday, will start but not run, ????
