T5.1 Tailgate handle issue - paint peeled off

As per above.
Has anyone has this issue? The black paint seems to be particularly thick - so perhaps not straight automotive paint?
Has anyone faced and resolved this issue. It's a bit of a pain to get the handle out to effect only a second-rate resolution.

Any suggestions from folk who have faced a similar issue?

Maybe some sort of enameling process rather than just paint .
