Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • T5 4motion bogged

I thought I would present a problem that happened to me in our LWB Diff Lock 4motion and see if anyone could offer a self rescuing solution.
The situation: driving along gravel road after some rain (not as much as recently), pulled over to do a GPS check and the LH front wheel sinks into mud, to the floor.
The mud was deep and the LH front wheel span beautifully, while ALL the other wheels remained stationary. I was going nowhere.
I tried diff lock but nothing changed, whenever I hit the accelerator the "bogged wheel" rotated, the other wheels didn't move.
I was dragged out of this by a passerby, but failing that, can anyone tell me how I could have extricated myself. I dont carry recovery gear because I don't go "off road" by myself.
I was digging a hole around the spinning front wheel to fill with rocks when the rescuer arrived, I just couldn't see another way out of this position.
Is there something I have missed with the capabilities of the 4motion with Diff Lock?

Whilst not knowing the full capabilities of the 4 motion I know or stock front wheel drive one has amazing ability to handle muddy conditions . Both our T5 2005 turbo diesel and now our 2012 4 pot turbo diesel have both shown amazing ability when confronted with muddy conditions . We do a bit of Moto Cross riding and camping at a place outside of Brisbane . We watched the morning after a night of heavy rain all other campers with their 4WDs slipping and sliding along the camp access track , with our van loaded with 3 people loads of camp gear and a trailer full of gear and three large Moto Cross bikes we set off . As we made our way along the track I could feel the front wheels scrambling for grip , the traction control light kept flashing and throttle response dropped as it was limited . We made our way along the track with the van moving nicely along , yes it was sort of moving slightly from side to side as each alternate wheel would grip and release . We did this for a few hundred metres until we came to the amenities block where lots of others were parked watching the parks tractor pulling campers out , as we pulled level with all the crowd I wound down the window and yelled VW,s RULE and took off laughing at all those who struggled with their 4wds .Maybe there is an issue with the ABS sensors which activate the traction control . Look at this video to see what we had to contend with , the ute seen had actually came down a side track and as he turned to leave he slipped over the embankment almost hitting other campers . 20170617 150009 - YouTube

Sounds like there is an issue with the traction control system that should be engaging the Haldex to send power to the rear and locking the rear diff lock and engaging the brake to control the spin on the wheel with no traction. I dont know what disengage buttons the T5 has but maybe its all been disengaged in some way

On the day I didn't think to change the Traction Control setting, I just turned Diff Lock on and off. As the picture shows, they are the only 2 buttons available. I think i will have check and see if the Diff Lock actually works!!

If the Haldex clutch (which send power to the rear wheels) is not working, the diff lock will not work either. Check the fuse of the Haldex and do a VCDS error code scan to see if there are any errors from the Haldex or the traction control or ABS modules.

Essentially it sounds like your T5 is FWD only at the moment.

Tks Sharkie, I will be checking it as you advise.
