  • turbo charger replacement

Just wondering if anyone can help with my multivan. it runs but has no power. it can get to 100kmh but slowly. glow plug lights is on and flashing. towards the end of my last drive in it the engine symbol light came on. looking at the user manual the flashing glow plug light indicates the enhgine management system is not working and the the engine symbol light idicates a faulty catalytic convertor.
took it to local VW dealer and they diagnosed it to be a faulty turbocharger

could someone enlghten me if they think this is the case. i thought that a turbo ****s itself there would be smoke ,noise etc

    any comment would appreciated

It could also be that piping between the turbo and intercooler has popped off a fitting or cracked? Equally though...yeah, the turbo bearing could have seized.

I was given to understand that smoke, fire and noise when turbos fail tends to only happen when the housing itself has failed...

Check all the small hoses around the engine as they use vacuum pressure to operate lots of the various valves etc , we had a turbo replaced in our T5 and it was still giving issues . After hunting around the engine bay I found a split on the bottom side of a vacuum hose which was causing problems , I could hear the sucking sound even with the engine idling .

It needs diagnosing, starting point being a scan of the ecu to see what the codes are. There is no point speculating on what has occurred.

This is almost the same thing that is happening with my T5 and the codes aren't really helping.
I'm waiting for a DPF differential sensor to arrive to see if that makes a difference when I rescan.
Currently, I have a negative number.
Maybe the sensor has carked it?'
                We'll see.

Hi there, hopefully it is not collapsed/disintergrated internals in the DPF restricting exhaust flow, as this can trigger warning lights and send into limp mode. Cheers, Scott.

Funny that my VW T4 2003 Transporter has the same problem. No power and the after about 1 min the glow plug light on the dash flashes. So I bought a new turbo cartridge and is still the same. I finished changing it today and my test drive was no power at all. I was thinking it is a vacuum problem. So tomorrow I'll start checking and see what it could be. If any body know what it is would help for sure. Cheers

                      Robertg,
The turbo on these when stuffed pushes the engine up into your inlet manifold. Also these are a throw away turbo cartridge. You can buy the cartridge like I did but a lot of work putting in and the best way I did it was remove the in let manifold and the you can remove exhaust manifold. But I just seen your date when you asked. the 11.03.2020. How did you go was it fixed??
                      Cheers John

Well guy's did all that for nothing putting in a new turbo cartridge which it did need one as the build up of the oil in the inlet manifold was really bad. So I cleaned it before I put it back on.
I was thinking that if I block the vacuum hose to the waste gate valve to see if that could be the problem with the valve that causes the vacuum to open the waste gate valve and dump the turbo boost.
It's really disappointing when you clean and add a new turbo cartridge and check every thing only to find it is still the same.

All I can say is HELP.

Yes and found that the vacuum line from that valve to the west gate valve was an open circuit. Even to find one of that valve or what ever it is called, most go with the transporter to scrap yard. Two people that wrecked there transporter left the valves on which was the valves with all the vacuum lines go to. I don'y want to buy a new one just in case it is not that. I have worked on it for days. even hired the support brace to try and have the engine forward but you got to remove so much that I packed it up and sent it back.
Anyway still the same problem NO power. Just dies on a hill or up grade.

Sorry. The scan showed the N75 valve had the open circuit. Today I will check if any power is to number 1 plug pin is a live. I did go trough all the fuses and found they were ok. Vacuum is working as I can switch the air flap to in side or air coming from out side when I push the button on the dash which it uses vacuum to change. I'm waiting for the post man to deliver my City vac so I can check if the waste gate valve is ok. I can also pressure check all my vacuum lines to see if any are no good.
