  • T5 facelift interior rattles

    I've decided to try and chase down all those rattles that have been annoying me for a very long time. Couldn't find many rattle threads here. Have found most of the suggestions on the euro forums. So I thought I'd make some notes about mine here...although I haven't finished the process yet. The problem is once one is fixed it seems like I can then hear a new one

    PS - I would also like to add a curse for all those so called professional panel beaters, mechanics and auto elecs (a big exception to Boris at Volkscare though) who I have paid good money to work on my van over the years (and I have had it from new...and I curse the original dealer too . Most of these problems and other things I have observed along the way are just their shoddy workmanship, especially when finishing off and putting things back together.

    Instrument cluster unit rattle;
    If I pushed the top of it I could see it flex back about 5+mm and made the noise. Had read that the rubbers at the top could shift or the 2 screws that hold it at the bottom could have come loose. It seems to be neither of those for me. I noted that the auto elec has had this unit out before as there is wiring work done behind it. But when it was put back in place, you have to push hard at the bottom of the unit as you are tightening up the screws. Otherwise the unit will rock back and forth and rattle.

    Glove box door not closing properly;
    Although I don't think this was causing a rattle, I couldn't work out why this was the case and how to fix it. However once I fully removed the glove box, I could there was cabling left that was impeding the glovebox being pushed all the way back into place. Once this was corrected I was able to adjust the glovebox door correctly. Again the auto elec had had the glovebox out while doing work previously.

    Broken white clips on plastic trims that have been removed and replaced;
    Again I don't think it was causing any of my noises. But 50% of those clips or the grey plastic mounts that support them have been bent and broken and now won't clip in correctly.

    Rear door dent repair;
    I thought this had been done well. Looked good from the outside. And I never put 2 and 2 together on that rattle that appeared down back at some stage. Then I was hit again in the same place and the new dent repairer who came to my home, showed me how the spot welds between frame and skin had been popped by the previous repairer and left like that. Sure enough I was able to create the annoying noise in that area. Sikaflexed along that seam and rattle was gone.

    TBA...I have that rattle that sounds like it is coming from the passenger pillar between front and sliding door;
    Have so far done those adjustments to the door fittings as suggested. I will redo them as I am not 100% positive of my work. However I also noticed under the car near there is what looks like a plastic cable tray which makes alot of noise when I push it. It has been worked on when I got my remote power system installed. Need to get the van up on stands to have a proper look.

    I forgot to mention that a while back I attended to the rattles in and around the centre console after the professional installed my new head unit. Unlike some other rattles they are pretty obvious to diagnose. I can't remember now exactly what I did. But I disassembled a number of parts and then just made sure they were re-seated better. It seems to me that in around the dash area on these vehicles, just a little bit out in position can be the difference between a rattle and not having one. I don't think I needed to use any tape or felt.

      I still don't quite believe it, but I think I am finally rattle free. After years of putting up with it and being too lazy to get off my @#$% and spend time on them (to be fair it's probably more my fear of the unknown and potentially causing a bigger problem...my history is littered with them) it really didn't take that long.
      This last rattle/knock, which I was certain was coming from the sliding door, and which I had tried all the remedies on with no improvement, was nothing to do with the door. It was either the passenger seat belt buckle rattling on the plastic door trim. Or more likely it was the plastic cover/shield under the vehicle under the passenger seat. When I pushed it I could easily make a rattle that didn't sound exactly like what I heard from in the car. When I got right under the vehicle I found the rattle was cause by one of the small 8mm mounting bolts into part of the exhaust shield? that was loose by about 5 turns. I doubt it had come loose. Looked more like someone took the plastic part off at some stage and when they put it back on started this bolt but forgot to tighten it. Fortunately there is no nut on the other side otherwise I might not have been able to tighten it.

        And one more I had forgotten. After having batteries installed under the seats, the drivers seat would regularly make a clunking noise when accelerating, etc. The same noise it makes after you have adjusted the seat. Took it back to the auto elect who of course said no problem. Also asked the mechanic to look at it with the same response. Now that I have fully removed the seat and base and refitted, reseated and retightened everything that noise has stopped. So I am not sure what it was. But like the dash it seems not getting something in exactly the right position can cause it. Next time I probably wouldn't wait 6 years before having a look at it

            I had an annoying rattle start a month or so back , was very noticeable on start up . I suspected the dreaded DMF was on its way as the old girl has clocked up over 330000 kays . I took it to my mechanic who agreed with me and so I put the wheels in motion for the DMF and a new clutch at the same time . While ordering the parts VW told the mechanic my T5 did not have a DMF ??? it was on the parts list but when ordered they said no , how confusing . Any way the van was booked in for the "rattle "to be fixed one way or the other . As they did not put it on the hoist the first time I went to the workshop they could not get close to the gearbox , well lo and behold no problem with the clutch the stupid Cat Converter was ****ting itself for the second time . So I now have a spare clutch kit { pointless sending it back they want 30% of the price for a return } so I will hang onto it for a future repair . The rattle will be gone shortly when my favourite exhaust shop beat the crap out of the centre of the cat with an iron bar !!

              Is that the alternative to blanking?

                Mines a petrol engine so blanking is not an option easier to beat it and restore performance and economy .
