  • T5 oil leak after service

My van was serviced about 3 weeks ago. Just noticed after moving it on a job site a small patch of oil on the ground.
On further investigation it seems to be leaking from the sump plug?

I’ll call the dealer who serviced it, but what could be the cause? Just not tightened up or something more sinister.

Either not tight enough, or they have over-tightened it and stripped the thread in the aluminium sump, or incorrect sump plug washer used would be the most likely scenarios.

On a side note, the oil looks pretty dirty considering it was only serviced a few weeks ago. Diesels do blacken the oil more quickly than a petrol engine, but still..

Maybe they used the old plug , last two times I have purchased VW oil at dealer they sold me new sump plugs each time .

I’ll have to check the invoice but I’m certain my apprentice asked me about when he picked it up as he saw it on the job card.

Even if you change the oil and filter every 6months/7500km all the time, after 3weeks of driving the colour of the oil looks ok to me.

You might need a Fumoto OilValve!

Never need to take the sump plug back out!

My oil looks like that a few days after a service.
I had to fit a Futomo valve because I failed to use a new copper washer or a new sump plug and it stripped out.
I glued it in with Loctite thread sealer as there was just a little bit left.
Getting the plug out was the worst part..............took a lot of patience and a couple of hours.

I often worry about apprentices, but I know we need to have them for the mechanics of the future. I just hope the dealerships & places that use apprentices to do most of the work are strict with their mobile phone policy while at work... A few years ago I had my motorbike serviced at a Harley shop - likely by an apprentice, & a few hundred km's later one of the spark plugs blew out of the head stripping the threads, the other was also loose...

I think most of us realised that.................but you have to admit............if it isn't an unsupervised apprentice causing these stuff ups............it's a 'Qualified' person!

VW Service left my less than 6 month old vehicle with no oil cap and a severe leak around the filter.
                    Compensation for their incompetence?
                    Not even an apology.

So I dropped in this afternoon to get them to check it out. Apparently it was “just a loose sump plug” and they tightened it up. When I asked about topping up the oil, I was told none was lost.

Not sure how I can get a 10cm size stain in 30 min yet not have lost any oil over 3 weeks.

                        Better than over filling it.
