Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • how to tell difference between 2.5tdi

    hi everyone.
can someone please help me to tell the difference between the 96kw and 128kw 2.5tdi transporter.
    i’m looking at a 2005 4motion. manual
it’s interstate so i’d have to ask the owner.

The 128kw is bloody quick for starters and is a 5 cylinder single Turbo diesel 96 kw is the non turbo version . Cam shaft problems were one of its problems if the wrong oil was used and occasionally cracks in the manifold oh and water pump failures .

My 96kw is a turbo engine, and didn't both of these power ratings have the same potential faults. So far mine has only had the poor quality water pump problem. I am not sure how you tell the difference at a glance.

also i’m trying to find out if it’s a 128kw without driving it.
so is there any numbers? or something you can tell it’s a 128?

weren't there different inlays for the TDI sign on the tailgate.Full red for the 128. Part or full chrome for lesser models?
AFAIK 96KW weren't sold publicly(panel van type), only for fleets or am i wrong again

All the 100 or so kombi beaches brought to Australia had 96kw as far as I know.

Options sticker, look at the driver seat base top view facing kind of front side of the base.

Interesting, my 07 Transporter had chrome T and red DI, MY 08 Multivan had all red TDI
My Transporter had only a single headlight, is that the case for all Transporters, the Caravelle and Multivan all had twin headlights
Only the noise changes when you floor a 96kw whereas a 128 will also make more noise but actually go faster !

My new 2007 (June 2007 build) Transporter 128kW 5cyl had the 3 red TDI badges.
