  • T6 Warranty

I'm in the process of buying a new T6 and the salesman tells me that the 3 year manufacturers warranty started when the vehicle rolled off the factory floor. As this particular vehicle has May '17 build date the salesman reckons the warranty will end May 2020. Could this be right?

When we bought a 2006 demo model that was already 18 months old, we only got the remainder of the warranty, because it was classed as second hand. But your purchase is classed as new, so I think you should get a three year warranty from the date of purchase. You should ask whether the van is second hand or new. We got a significant reduction of the buying price because it was a demo.

Thanks Brian, this vehicle has about 20km on the clock and has not been registered (yet) so I would consider it new. Would the fact that I had a test drive make it a demo?

I doubt it, if its never been registered and only done 20km then I would consider it new and you would be the first owner and have a three year warranty from the date of purchase. Ours had done 10,000km when we bought it and was registered, so we had the remainder of the warranty which started when it was first registered, same as if you bought a second hand car from someone and got the remainder of the warranty. I think this salesman is trying to pull a swiftie.

A salesman pull a swiftie?? Who would have thought such a thing was possible?

Why worry? You won't need to call on the warranty.

Must be a German thing our aftermarket sunroofs are sold to us and according to the Aus head office warranty starts on the date it is delivered to us, even if we buy them for future stock they count shelf life into the warranty period . Strangely they don,t count the months on the ship to Aus and the time on shelves in Sydney but once we get it it starts . I agree with others jump up and down and go to the sales manager , if his story is correct then every van sold would have to be classified as second hand according to his theory .

I hope you didn’t believe him and just walked away? I would have.

I did a bit of trawling on the net, The third link seems to have the most interest or relevance.

                          He definitely is.

Just before Christmas when car shopping I also came across a salesman at southern suburbs VW dealership, who appeared lacking in the product knowledge. In first few moments, I thought that he must be a new to VW brand, so I let him talk, but once he revealed that he’s with the brand for around 10 years, I’ve quickly ended conversation and left.
For sure the staff at dealerships have enough product training days to know at least very basics, even if they have absolutely no interest in the cars and somehow get to sell them (employed by a mistake).

You made me laugh...having you walk into a VW yard shopping would be like having the design engineer of Brother walking into Officeworks to buy a printer.

                              LOL, Miro

I started shopping cars a while ago based on the salesperson. Since I generally know more about the car I'm interested in than any salesperson I've encountered, I've become picky in who I will deal with. Unless I am comfortable that the salesman knows his product quite well and seems at least half decent a human being, I'll walk to another dealer.

When I bought my Mustang, my original contact at the dealership was an idiot to put it bluntly. Through my mate of who is the manager of the nextdoor Jaguar dealership (same group) I made it known to the sales manager at Ford that I wanted 1) somebody who knew the car, 2) was good to deal with and 3) an enthusiast. Few days later I got a call from the Ford Sales Manager who personally dealt with me to the end of the sale.

Similar story about a year later at VW when I bought the Golf. Did visit 3 dealerships before I was happy ......

And finally, looked at a new V6 580 Dark Label last Friday. This dealership sold me 3 cars already, but "my guy" left and the novice who talked to me, promptly lost the sale. I think I'll go to where "my guy" is now the Sales Manager even though its a 100km drive ...
