100% the parts and oils were available. I was doing them as early as 2008.

The main reason the dealers never pushed the issue was that nobody wanted to pay for it.

I had exactly the same reply from VW spare parts “we can order it for you, but it’s very expensive”.

I was told the gasket was around $15 and the filter $45 plus the filler unit and fluid .

Had a brief in person chat with David from Automatics of Marion, today. He actually had a T5 up on the hoist, and gearbox in bits when i was there.Showed me a few of their probs.
With mine, he did mention something about o-rings going hard, which may explain the rubber like particles i found, or some prob with forward clutch where a thrust washer or similar spins, digging into metal. He did say it was hard to diagnose without going into the box.
He explained that he was a bit full up these next few weeks, so may see him again in October, for a full dismantle and inspection/rebuild.
Will cost a few dollars, in the region $2K or so, can't be exact at the moment.
My solenoid resistance measurements were in the ballpark

Fair enough however were you doing them as per a factory service scheduled item. I'd be surprised if that's a yes because my own service manual never listed a transmission service of any kind and it was only when problems started showing up that word started spreading. T5 I think hit the road in Europe in 2004 so euro vans by 80K were starting to show problems...and the auto wasn't the major seller as well.

Yes, the amount of auto transmissions in the van (and cars too) in Europe is insignificant, plus they generally don't last as long as ours, because of the winter conditions.

The owners manual in the glovebox and its servicing section is a guide only and most likely it has written something like "for an uptodate servicing information see the dealer".

It wasn't part of the service schedule until around 2010-2011. But subsequently removed due to the aforementioned costs involved.

Even if it wasn't part of the schedule, there was no reason why a customer couldn't have it done, if they were happy to pay for it.

The issue is by not having it listed initially most owners were never asked to have the service and for those with some knowledge how many thought to ask for it as well?

One could argue that removing it and then have failures occur outside of warranty might be a "another" reason for removing the schedule as well.
Sadly I wouldn't consider this an unlikely scenario based on the historical behavior of VW.
Didn't the T5GP with change to dsg version come out at this time also?

Ironically I paid the high charge for the service and sadly right afterwards had the transmission fail and replaced, lol. One could say I caused the disturbance of the up until then perfectly functioning auto and a clean out didn't increase longevity.

Gearbox is fixed thanks to Dave at Automatics of Marion.
K1 clutch clearances over spec and seals damaged, causing the thumping.

Anyway, all fixed.Dave did his various modifications that he does for these, and some other stuff(K1 piston and friction fibres replaced, new more reliable small can solenoids, air cooler). Refilled with my choice of Penrite ATF FS. All up $3500ish.

Around Easter i noticed a new problem with the gearbox, flaring on the 5 to 6 change, all the time. Plus an intermittent flare on the 2 to 3.
Talked to Dave again, and he suspected a bad solenoid, as did I.
Got it back to him so he could roadtest and check it out.
As a first resort, he replaced a few solenoids, which didn't end up fixing it.Then he tried a recon valve body, better but not fully fixed. This was all free of charge, which was very good of him.
Last option was to remove the box again.Ended up replacing the B1 piston, seals, fibres and steels, which seems to have done the job.

I sort of agree with you we had one of those "Tiptronic autos "Sealed for Life " when it went belly up I found it was VW,s lack of understanding of Australian climate and lack of brains in thinking the fluid inside would never decay that caused ours to fail . Blocked filter and burnt fluid killed it , what hurt most was when they released the DSG they then said that auto,s should and could be serviced every 60000 km , they also devised a method to service the Tiptronic at the same time . Too bloody late VW the damage was done , any way my work T5 is a manual and other than the throw out bearing failing at around 200000 plus kays its all good . Mind you the stupid DMF is still a ticking time bomb in the manuals .

I still remember the looks that I was getting from customers, when I suggested them they should get their transmission serviced. Even today, there are still forum members who suggest that the mechanics who offer extra service on components which aren’t serviceable like your Aisin Toyota transmission, should be reported that they want to rip people off.

I still wish people like you had put that service capability up before ours went belly up , but as the failure was what drove me to join VW Watercooled it was too late by then .
