Front brake discs

Hi all

Vw t5 2011 TDI 2.0
Multivan

Could anyone confirm for me what tool to use to remove the front discs (The single bolt that holds the discs on )
One video on web says a M10 spline, another says T10 torx?
I’m planing on doing pads & discs this weekend,
So haven’t taken wheel off yet, just want to get all tools required.

M10 Spline.

You'll need a long breaker bar, or a pipe on a short one, to crack the caliper bolts (21mm) though.

The caliper slide bolts to get the pads out, are 9mm hex, from memory.

Just make sure you clean the backing part of where the disc bolts onto if there is any rust ensure its clean , as I discovered a couple of sets ago that small amount of rust can cause the disc to sit incorrectly and cause vibration when braking .

Front brake discs

So all went well on the disc & pad change,
I also undone the two front brake lines to take calipers off & gave really good clean & a paint.
So of course might as well do a brake fluid flush & bleed. Seems I have some air still in the lines somewhere cuz the pedal will very very slowly keep going down, brakes work fine though.
After reading a bit on the web , I’m not sure if I need to VCDS the abs module to cycle it, thing is I don’t have vag-com or software like this to do it.
Only have the mobile OBDCarDoctor etc.
the other thing I was going to try was to pressure bleed the brakes, as we were doing it old fashioned way , pumping pedal into bottle with a bit of new fluid in the bottle to start with ??
Anyone have any thoughts??

From the old days, a sinking pedal used to be a sign of failing seals in the master cylinder as the fluid would under pressure leak back past the seals causing the fluid to return to the reservoir . Nice paint work though !

There is a good reason why Volkswagen requires brake fluid to be pressure bled. You can’t get all the contaminated brake fluid out of the ABS pump by pushing the brake pedal like in the old days.

This is similar to the pressure bleeder I use but mine is model 0100 European model. I purchased it several years ago through Amazon for around US$50 + freight. Amazon no longer will post to Aust. & I believe GST is now added. Works well but I use mine dry to eliminate messy cleaning, but you need to watch the res. level.

Thanks jets, Im using one off a guy at work, he hasn’t used it himself yet, what psi did you use on your Vw ??

what psi did you use on your Vw ??

I normally pump pressure to 1 Bar [14 PSI]. Some say up to 2 Bar with ABS but whatever gets the job done to get reasonable flow through the bleeder at the least pressure.

What brake discs and pads do people recommend for the 103TDI Multivan?

Also what sort of $$ do they run?

You can safely use the DBA brake discs, you won’t feel any changes in the braking characteristics. I have also used Bendix GCT pads on my T5 and they have lasted much longer than the genuine pads and discs.
There is no ATE Ceramic pad available for the T5,T6 vans and other brands that claim to be dust less long lasting or ceramic, they just aren’t any of these and just not worth to spend money on, if you want less dust and significantly longer brakes life.
